About

This nature reserve, just a 40 minute drive from Pretoria, is popular with outdoor enthusiasts looking to swap the hustle and bustle of the city for the fresh air and quiet of the highveld.

The dam, a focal point in the reserve, is a haven for waterfowl and the grasslands that surround it attract a number of interesting endemic bird species. More than 200 birds have been recorded in the reserve and it is an excellent place to see common inland waders, grassland birds such as the blue korhaan and a variety of reed warblers.

Although water levels in the dam can vary from season to season there are a number of water-based activities to enjoy all year round, including angling, boating and water skiing. The reserve can be busy on weekends and public holidays, so if you want to stay at one of the camping sites along the dam’s shore you need to book in advance.

In addition to exploring the reserve’s mainly grassland habitat on foot, you can relax at the swimming pool, have a meal at the restaurant, or enjoy the sounds and smells of the highveld from the bird hide.
