You have a self-drive option or you can come for 4x4 training. This is a perfect year-round venue. A campsite offers accommodation at Kungwini, but several self-catering or B&B accommodation options are available nearby. There is an eco-trail and an obstacle course at Kungwini. At Kungwini you can also go hiking and birdwatching. For those looking for more, the neighbouring Kungwini Leisure Sport Resort offers water sports, mountain biking, horse riding and abseiling.
Kungwini is situated just 50km from Pretoria, right at the eastern tip of the Magaliesberg Mountains overlooking the picturesque Kungwini Lake (formerly known as the Bronkhorstpruit Dam). This is your chance to slip away from the rush and get back to earth on a secluded farm with its adventurous 4x4 route.
The 8km off-road eco-trail on the eastern extremity of the Magaliesberg will not only test your driving, but also your ecological knowledge. It winds through the bush and a small swamp area before making its way into the koppies. Once over the rocks and at the top you will be welcomed by a fantastic view over the Kungwini Lake.
Take time out to enjoy the beautiful picnic spots and study the stone circle ruins along the way. There are an estimated 200 000 stone circles scattered over Africa that bear witness to the existence of early civilisations that mined the area for gold. If the past does not fascinate you, maybe the teeming bird life on the birdwatching trail will.
The 4x4 Academy obstacle track is another story. This is the perfect place to test your vehicle and your own driving skills without the risk of damaging your vehicle. The track was designed by Johan Klopper. It offers advanced 4x4 off-road training in a controlled environment and with an accent on enjoying 4x4ing in an eco-friendly manner.
The Basic Academy track is approximately 600m long weaving between trees and across no less than 12 obstacles. These include a long side tilt, a see-saw and a wading pool that is 600mm deep. The Advanced Academy track for the more experienced driver is a natural track offering another 20 obstacles with a difficulty grading of up to 4/5.
The campsite is in a secluded bush area of the farm and offers 10 exclusive stands dotted through the bush that can host up to 50 vehicles. There is a lovely boma for your night-time campfires, with an open air toilet and hot water showers. Birdwatching is high up on the list of things to do and the list of birds to be seen will not disappoint you. A network of paths weaves its way across the 500ha farm and provides hours of hiking and exploration.
The nearby Kungwini Lake is perfect for fishing, sailing, jet skiing or waterskiing. And if you haven't had enough of 4x4ing yet, Kungwini also organises exclusive 4x4 trips to Botswana from May to September. These take place in some private camps in Savute, Moremi, Maun, Kasane and the Okavango Delta for a maximum of four vehicles at a time.
Coming from Bronkhorstspruit on the R25, look out for the Bronkhorstbaai/Kungwini turnoff on your left. Then turn right at the first gravel farm road and “[email protected]” sign.
