Configuration: Not so much a trail as three different 'playgrounds' that can be accessed in any order.
Terrain: Clay, waterholes, mud, steep ascents and descents.
It is a self-drive route; no guiding needed. The route is suitable for all-year driving, but definitely trickier during the rainy season. A wide range of accommodation options is available as well as camping, a bush pub and a fully licensed restaurant. There is only one route at Sandwani, but there are quite a few others in the region, e.g. Kungwini or Rhino Park. A host of activities like paintball, game viewing, mountain biking and even bow hunting is on offer.
Sandwani Game Lodge is situated on a private game reserve in a small valley with typically hilly landscape and within easy driving distance of Johannesburg and Pretoria. It is part of the De Tweedespruit Conservation Area and is an ideal destination to inhale the fascinating atmosphere of Africa. You can admire, close up, the docile impala, gemsbok, blesbok, blue wildebeest, warthog and many more members of the wonderful local fauna.
This is a great place to come and have some fun. What makes this trail different is that it spans three quarry excavations; each of them offering a series of different 4x4 obstacles. It is an excellent training ground for novice drivers, while the experts will have enough to play with. The biggest and most frequent challenges are ascents and descents of different grading, some with cross axle sections to keep things interesting. During the rainy season the trail can become seriously slippery as the clay content in the quarries' soil is rather high. Other obstacles include water crossings, a huge boulder or two and some step-ups. A map is provided, but the trail is not marked.
Sandwani offers accommodation for up to 34 persons in self-catering chalets or as B&B in the main lodge. There is a campsite with showers and toilets, and a bush camp that only has basic toilet facilities. The Sandwani Bush Pub offers a selection of beverages from cool drinks to something a little stronger and its restaurant has a delicious array of meals for every taste.
Among other activities, off-road bikes and quad bikes are welcome. There are special tracks for them and they may not use the same trail as the 4x4s. The relaxed folks can go game viewing or birdwatching while the excited bunch can start a paintball war or go bow hunting (if you come during the right season). You can also go hiking, fishing or swimming.
Although Sandwani is only 15km north of Cullinan it makes more sense to approach via the N1 and M8 if you are coming from Pretoria or the M10 and M8 if you are coming from Johannesburg. Make sure to head left to stay on the M8, 9km after the spot where the M8 crosses Zambesi Drive (R513). Then carry straight on for another 9km on the M8 to reach Sandwani.
