Amanzimtoti (eManzimtoti)

South Coast

About

Thanks to urban creep, Amanzimtoti, or Toti as it’s known to locals, has almost become part of Durban. But despite being just a short 30-kilometre trip down the highway, Toti has managed to retain its own unique feel and the small-town vibe that keeps residents here and visitors coming back.

This is another spot that derives its name from a Zulu phrase, this one accorded to King Shaka. Legend has it that the great king was returning to Zululand after a raid in the south and camped on the banks of this river. When he tasted the water, he said, “Kanti amanza mtoti” (So, the water is sweet). The river was so named, and the town that was formally established in 1962 followed suit.

Fun is also to be had at the Splash Water World, where a variety of water rides are available, while the recently opened Galleria shopping centre offers all manner of entertainment.

For those keen on the dimpled ball, the Amanzimtoti Golf Course is just a bit further inland, while the Amanzimtoti Bird Sanctuary is another popular attraction. The iLanda Wilds Nature Reserve is another spot where nature lovers can wander in search of birds, reptiles and plants.

Toti offers the visitor a convenient and relaxed stay out of the buzz of Durban but with all the conveniences of modern city life. Long sandy beaches meet the warm Indian Ocean, offering great surfing and swimming under the watchful eyes of lifeguards.

Look out for

The Amanzimtoti Bird Sanctuary is a nice place for the whole family. More than 150 species of bird have been recorded here, and an easy half-hour walk will provide you with an opportunity to see many of them. Lawns, gardens, an expanse of water and forests all feature in this little gem.Head to the beautiful beaches for typical summer days of swimming, surfing, tanning and manual labour with a bucket and spade. The Sardine Run also makes an appearance in winter and shouldn’t be missed.

Galleria is Toti’s latest and greatest shopping centre and, in addition to a range of shops, it offers a number of forms of entertainment. So on a rainy day, head to Galleria and choose from ice-skating, go-karting, watching a movie, arcade games, 10-pin bowling and even glow-in-the-dark putt-putt.

Splash Water World will keep the kids entertained for hours, should the beach be a little wild on the day. A variety of rides, refreshments and even miniature golf are part of the attraction.
