About

Turning off the busy N3 just an hour south of Johannesburg, the sounds of the highway slowly fade away as travellers drive into the hills of the Mpumalanga Highveld, before it ceases completely on arrival at Badgerleur Bush Lodge.  It is hard to imagine that a peaceful wildlife destination exists so close to the urban hustle and bustle, but the lodge provides tranquil relief from city life, offering game viewing in a beautiful reserve dotted with rocky hills and unspoilt bush.

Comprising six luxury suites and two super deluxe suites, accommodation is luxurious but homely, and with three delicious meals per day included in the rates, guests can completely unwind and enjoy everything that the lodge and reserve have to offer.

The luxury suites look out over a waterhole that plays host to several hippos, while the plains beyond are traversed by herds of zebra, eland, wildebeest and giraffe, with the bonus of the odd rhino. There can be no better cure for the city blues than observing this picturesque panorama from a comfy seat on the private deck, a cold drink in hand. The beds are labelled King-size, but are actually bigger, while the bathrooms are appointed with generously-sized showers.

Guests in the superior deluxe rooms can sink into the same indulgent King-size beds, but are able to enjoy a little more space and the romance of full en-suite bathrooms designed for two. Spacious dressing rooms allow plenty of storage space for long-staying guests, and the covered patios have lovely views over the reserve. The beds in both room types can be converted to twins, while additional facilities include tea/coffee stations, minibars and safes.

The high standard of the rooms is matched by the quality of the food, which would not be out of place in a top-class gourmet restaurant. Enjoying dinner in the outdoor boma or a braai in the bush are particularly special African treats.

Guests are able to take part in a number of entertaining, informative wildlife activities during their stay. Morning guided walks are complimentary and include a one hour trail around the lodge, focusing on bird and tree identification, or a longer two hour walk deep into the bush, where all the natural delights of the reserve will be revealed by a knowledgeable guide. There is a possibility of stumbling across rhino and hippo during the longer walk, making this option unsuitable for children under 16.

Sunrise and sundowner game drives in an open vehicle are available at extra cost, and drinks can be bought from the bar and taken along in a cool box.

Horse-back safaris give a different perspective of the reserve, and for an insight into the nocturnal life of the bush, guests can embark on night drives during the summer months, with stargazing thrown in.

Other activities include archery, clay pigeon shooting and bass fishing, while kids will love close-up encounters with the farm’s domestic animals.

During down time, guests can relax in the lounge or grab a towel from reception and jump into the swimming pool.
