Southbroom

South Coast

About

Situated more or less between the mouths of the Imbezane and Umkobi rivers, Southbroom is a beautiful stretch of lagoons, beaches, bays and bush.

Like many towns on the south coast, Southbroom exists mainly as a tourist destination, the population swelling over school holidays and plummeting again out of season. This makes it a great place to visit during the school term, if you have that luxury, to explore a beautiful region without throngs of people.

Ocean entertainment includes most of the south coast staples, with good fishing and swimming spots, a wonderful snorkelling or rock pool spot in Granny’s Pool and a lovely lagoon.

As you’d expect, there is a wide variety of tourist accommodation that ranges from cottages for rent all the way up to the exclusive hotel accommodation at San Lameer.

And while its beaches are up among the best on the coast, Southbroom also has more than a few attractions that don’t focus on the sea.

Good golf courses, some pretty walks and nature reserves, arts and crafts and good restaurants are all on the cards.

Look out for

Golf – Those who fancy ruining a good walk, as Mark Twain famously described the game of golf, are well catered for by San Lameer Golf Course to the south and Southbroom Golf Course within the town limits.

A good way to spend a morning is by following the Bushbuck Trail, which starts near the tennis club in town. Established by residents, the Bushbuck Trail offers refuge to bushbuck, blue and grey duiker and some very interesting birds. Other walks include the Imbezane River walk or a stroll to the Outlook.

The Mpenjati Nature Reserve on the Mpenjati River lies a few kilometres south of Southbroom. While it is fairly small, Mpenjati is home to a large lagoon, wetlands and dunes. Activities include bird-watching, walks, fishing, canoeing and swimming in the sea or lagoon.

Those who appreciate the skill that goes into knife-making will be pleased to hear that there are two artisans who produce fine knives in the area. Burger Knives and Bauchop Knives are a few kilometres apart, just out of town on the way to Trafalgar.Selsdon Park Estate offers horse rides on the beach for everyone from novices to more experienced riders. If horses aren’t your thing, try riding a quad bike on the farm.

The Art studio of Helene Bruce-Webster is a great place to see and buy her work, or to learn how to try painting yourself. Helene offers demonstrations and classes on painting in different mediums.

The Riverbend Crocodile Farm has been going for decades and offers an interesting and educational experience of crocodiles and snakes. In season, you can watch little crocs hatching from their leathery eggs.
