Conveniently situated just on the outskirts of Pretoria near the Bon Accord Dam, these trails offer a perfect regular weekend warrior escape for hassled urbanites. The riding is through pretty, typically peri-urban small-scale agricultural land with the addition of the open space around the Bon Accord Dam.
The most popular rides are the Sunday 3-hour trails. There are two: one in the morning and one in the afternoon. The group starts off together and splits up halfway through, with one half heading off at quite a pace and the other taking it more sedately. Even though it’s a three-hour excursion it’s not a hectic ride. You stop for quite a while at the dam, where you unsaddle the horses and just relax. Or you can buy breakfast at a waterside establishment. For the culturally minded, the ride offers views of the Apies River that proved no barrier to the intrepid Winston Churchill as he escaped from the Boers during the South African War.
For less culturally minded riders, there is a five-hour Saturday horseback pub crawl. Just make sure you have someone to drive you home. There’s also a very popular Friday night moonlight ride to the dam, which is offered for small groups.
Bon Accord caters for all levels of riders.
