Friends of the Rail (FOTR), is a group of volunteer railway enthusiasts offering authentic steam-hauled vintage train trips in and around the Tshwane, Pretoria, Midrand and Johannesburg areas.
A full-day steam train excursion to the historic villages of Cullinan, north-east of Pretoria, is one of FOTR’s most popular rail trips. It promises a day filled with fun, history and adventure.
Your ride for the day is a 1949 Class 24, No. 3664 locomotive that travels at a leisurely pace of 60 km/h, so you’ll have plenty of time to relax and watch the trackside scenery go by.
Aside from the nostalgic joy of steam train travel, a rail tour to Cullinan has historic value as the train follows the route of the original NZASM railway. This is an 11km-long branch line, unchanged in over 100 years. It was commissioned by Paul Kruger in the late 1880s to link Pretoria to Delagoa Bay (now Maputo).
On the train’s arrival at the Cullinan station, you can disembark and are free to enjoy lunch, and explore the village’s avenue of cafes, restaurants and antique shops. Or stay and capture action photography shots of the train as the firebox is cleaned and the locomotive readied for the return trip.
A Cullinan rail tour is a wonderful family outing and a memorable way to celebrate a special occasion. Unlike most steam engines that operate solely on coal, FOTR has a special ingredient that keeps the old trains chugging along: passion.
