-25.8843, 27.8824

The Magaliesberg mountain range is a natural landmark, formed over 2 million years ago. It stretches for 120km across the Gauteng and North West Provinces.

A popular leisure destination for city dwellers and outdoor enthusiasts, the mountains are easily reached by car or motorcycle from Johannesburg or Pretoria. Also ideal for couples and families wanting a weekend getaway, the Magaliesberg mountains offer tranquillity, natural beauty and an abundance of fun activities.

Because of the many species of plants, insects and animals that are unique to its environs, the Magaliesberg mountains are a protected natural environment. Visitors should be aware that the majority of the area is privately owned, and it’s advisable to check if a visitor’s permit is needed before going climbing, walking or kloofing.

Numerous tour operators based close to the Magaliesberg mountains offer adventure activities like canopy tours, white water rafting, quad biking, abseiling and horse riding. You could also play a round of golf at nearby Pecanwood Golf & Country Club and enjoy great views of the Magaliesberg at the same time.

Nature reserves like the Mountain Sanctuary Park offer affordable overnight accommodation, mountain biking, hiking and bird watching. In summer, swimming in rock pools and mountain streams is a delight.

For those disinclined towards active pursuits, there are wellness retreats, restaurants, farm stalls, guesthouses, art galleries and craft markets to explore in the quaint Magaliesberg villages.

For the ultimate view of the Magaliesberg mountains, charter a helicopter and ridge-hop along its craggy quartzite contours. You’ll be treated to spectacular views of the dams, farms, wildlife ranches and country hotels in its foothills.
