A visit to Pretoria’s National Zoological Gardens is a must-do for families and animal lovers. Pretoria Zoo, as it is known to the locals, was voted among the top 10 zoos in the world.
Established in 1899, the zoo received national status in 1916. It has grown to include an aquarium, a reptile park, and two off-site Biodiversity Conservation Centres in the North West and Limpopo provinces. A smaller satellite zoo, the Emerald Animal World, is in Vanderbijlpark.
Covering 85ha, the Pretoria zoo is the largest in the country with thousands of indigenous and exotic species of mammals, birds, reptiles, and fish. Visitors can observe them in natural, open air enclosures and well-appointed indoor areas.
Conservation, recreation and education are the main activities of the zoo. There are zoo tour options available, like spending a Friday or Saturday night touring the nocturnal animal’s enclosures or the aquarium. Why not pack your tent and invite friends and family for a zoo sleepover? Or have your child’s next birthday party ‘in the wild’. During the school holidays, the zoo offers a wide variety of educational courses for kids of all ages.
The zoo has a restaurant, a curio shop, and picnic and braai areas. It provides a number of ways to get around if you’re not fit to go on foot. Catch the Zoo Choo-Choo tractor train, hire a golf cart, or ride the aerial cableway. The latter will allow you to view Pretoria Zoo and its menagerie of wondrous creatures as you’ve never seen them before.
