Polokwane (Pietersburg)

Polokwane is the urban hub of Limpopo province. The capital city offers an entertaining mix of city adventures - from ambient African jazz clubs to the biggest shopping centre in Limpopo. There are plenty of wonderful natural attractions within an easy drive from Polokwane – from the wild mountains of Magoebaskloof and the northern Drakensberg to the Kruger National Park.

Polokwane has pleasant leafy suburbs, rapidly expanding residential developments and a lively, bustling downtown area. The latter is set around the civic centre gardens. There are some excellent museums and galleries, and a surprisingly high number of public sculptures.  Many hotels, lodges and guest houses are in and around the city, and there is an international airport. From laid-back bistros and cafes to fine dining, Polokwane offers a variety of Afro-fusion cuisine.

Polokwane is a gateway city: all roads lead to something interesting. To the east are the mountains of Magoebaskloof. To the west, the bushveld and to the north, the Kruger National Park. Polokwane is bounded by mountains to the east and bushveld to the west. Within an hour or two of the city you can be game viewing, hiking, horse riding, birding, rock climbing or just picnicking.

Look out for

Arts & culture - The Polokwane Art Museum downtown has an excellent collection of South African art. Nearby Irish House – you can’t miss it, it’s painted bright green – has fascinating displays from pre-history to Victorian times. The Hugh Exton Photographic Museum has some 20 000 black and white images of early Polokwane. Don’t miss the Industrial Sculpture Park - an outdoor exhibition of sculptures by well-known South African artists. The Bakone Malapa Northern Sotho Museum is an open air ‘living’ museum. It houses many traditional northern Sotho cultural exhibits.

Polokwane Game Reserve - This popular game reserve is on the city’s doorstep. It offers you a choice of bushveld pursuits - from game viewing and horse riding to bush walks and champagne breakfasts. Or enjoy a candlelit dinner, bushveld style.

Meropa Casino & Entertainment World - This is Polokwane’s pleasuredome, offering a small but classy casino and assorted coffee shops, restaurants and nightclubs. Meropa is a popular spot for the city’s trendy set. Jembe Tavern, a cosmopolitan Afro-chic jazz club, features frequent live music.

Extreme adventures - You’ll find adrenalin-pumping activities north-east of Polokwane in the Magoebaskloof mountain area. You can go tubing, kloofing, river rafting, spelunking and zipping through the trees on a canopy tour.
