At the corner of Jan Smuts and Jellico streets in Rosebank, is an avant-garde structure, Circa on Jellico, a new contemporary multimedia art gallery.

Located on a busy urban intersection, Circa, conceived as an independent, functional free-standing sculpture in its own right, has quickly become a Johannesburg landmark that challenges our perceptions of ‘art’ and ‘art galleries’.

Circa’s most striking feature is its permeable façade made of aluminium ‘fins’ that wrap around the 3-storey gallery, letting in large amounts of natural light. The cladding is reflective and creates a mesmerising play of light and shadow which you’ll experience when you climb the external, spiral ramp that connects the ground and first floors. At night the gallery building lights up in different colours.

In keeping with its futuristic exterior, Circa is eco-friendly too. Electricity is produced on-site using solar panels, and harvested rain water is used for all the gallery’s utilitarian functions.

Circa’s multi-purpose gallery space is designed to cater for all modes of art, from video installations to large scale sculptures. It is also equipped to host art auctions, lectures and private functions.

Entrance to Circa is free. In addition to being bowled over by the extraordinary gallery building, art lovers can look forward to exhibitions by leading South African artists - Willem Boshof, Zwelethu Mthethwa, and Karel Nel among them.

Address: 2 Jellicoe Ave, Rosebank, Johannesburg
