Bredasdorp is situated on the R316 between Napier and Arniston. The Heuningberg ridge rises just south of town while the undulating farmlands of wheat, barley, and canola roll away to the north, east, and west.

It is the economic capital of the Overberg and a relatively bustling place in comparison to most other towns in the region. It’s centrally positioned for day trips to the De Hoop Nature Reserve and the coastal towns of Arniston and L’Agulhas.

The town centres around the picturesque Bredasdorp Square while the quiet back streets are a mix of old and modern architecture. Unusually the town is well known because of two craft emporiums - Julian’s Ceramics and Kapula Candles.

Bredasdorp harkens back to the days when churches were the seeds around which towns grew, and due to the disagreement between two prominent members of the local community both the towns of Bredasdorp and Napier were founded.

Look out for

Shipwreck Museum - Founded in 1975, this is the town’s best-loved attraction. It houses artefacts and furniture from ships wrecked along the South African coastline; it contains showpieces specific to the Overberg; and it has the biggest collection of bottles in South Africa.

Julian’s Gallery and Ceramics - Situated in town, on the R319 to Swellendam, this gallery has become a landmark. Their ceramics are popular because of their unique designs and colour combinations.

Kapula Candles - For candles of every shape, size, and colour, this is another Bredasdorp success story, and has evolved into an award-winning and dynamic enterprise. Their large showroom is in the industrial area.

Heuningberg Nature Reserve - The 800ha reserve has spectacular views east to Arniston and De Hoop, south to Struisbaai, west along the mountains, and north over the town to the Rûens and Riviersonderend Mountains. There’s a large variety of Erica and Protea species in the reserve. Walking trails are 2-15km in the mountains. Entry is at the top end of Van Riebeeck Street, but pop into the tourism office to check if the gate is manned.

De Hoop Nature Reserve - Bredasdorp is the closest large town to this coastal nature reserve well known for its superb whale watching between June and November.
