This small gym (previously known as The Cage), at Saint Peter’s Preparatory School on Witkoppen Road, is unlike most climbing walls in that it’s primarily a training centre rather than a recreational facility, with the emphasis being on introducing people, particularly kids, to the sport and facilitating their development.
In keeping with this philosophy, the wall is open only during the week - at weekends, you should be on real rock! Owner Neil Margetts is a rock-climbing guide so most weekends he takes groups to local crags.
Essentially, this is a 4,8-metre-high bouldering gym (with top-roped climbing for beginners) with about 100m2 of climbing area. The walls are angled at 15 degrees, 30 degrees, 45 degrees and 90 degrees, with the routes colour-marked according to their difficulty, based on the Fontainebleau circuit grading system.
In addition to introductory classes, there are adult classes every Tuesday and Thursday nights. The academy hosts numerous provincial bouldering league competitions and was the venue for the National Bouldering League final in 2010.
The climbing area is being developed all the time and, in setting up the gym as a training/coaching centre, they’ve put in lots of fun stuff, such as games, timers, therabands, footwork boards, weight vests, movement sensors and a pull-up bar with campus slots. Not only has the bouldering wall grown, but the entire centre has developed into an extensive sports hangout, with a weight and kettlebell gym, squash courts, indoor soccer, running track and swimming pool for cross-training, as well as a specialised sports nutrition shop.
The gym has showers and a kiosk selling drinks and snacks and is open from 6pm to 8pm on Mondays, 6pm to 9pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays and 5.30pm to 8pm on Wednesdays.
