Stanford is situated on the Klein River between Hermanus and Gansbaai. It’s one of the best-preserved villages in the Western Cape and its market square dates back to 1875. Like many Overberg towns it’s popular with visitors, especially on weekends and during holidays.

Stanford offers a peaceful country experience against the backdrop of the Kleinrivier Mountains. It’s a town of art, antiques, and an eclectic mix of new and old architecture. The town’s restaurants serve some of the best food in the region.

Recommended attractions include the river trip, a tour of the Birkenhead Brewery, and a visit to award-winning Klein River Cheese farm. In the main street the only traffic lights are outside the Stanford Pub and Grill, indicating when the place is open and closed.

Look out for

Historical walk - like most small towns Stanford’s streets are pleasant to stroll along. Pick up a leaflet from the tourism office that’ll give some information on the historic buildings along the way.

Birkenhead Micro-brewery - they brew German style beers and an English style bitter. It’s best to phone ahead to book a tour or check if their pub is open.

Klein River Dairy - along the R326. They have won numerous awards for their cheese, of which the most famous is their Gruyere & Leiden. What’s more, this is virtually the only place in South Africa where these two varieties are made, and their Raclette is just as good. They produce about 10-tons of cheese per month, so there is plenty for visitors to taste and buy at their shop. The cheese-making process can be viewed through large picture windows; as can the maturing room. They also do picnic lunches in summer for visitors to enjoy beneath the trees or down by the river.

Birding - Stanford and birding are synonymous. Anytime of year is good and the fringes of the Klein River are particularly rewarding.
