The Ditsong National Museum of Natural History used to be the Transvaal Museum of Natural History, which in turn developed from the 1892 Zuid Afrikaanse Republiek’s Staatsmuseum. Gauteng’s only natural history museum, it is one of the largest of its kind in South Africa.
The museum, which collects and preserves South Africa’s natural heritage, has fantastic collections of original fossil material, skeletons, skins and mounted specimens. It can all be viewed by the public and accessed by researchers and academics.
The whole family will find something of interest in the museum’s four exhibition halls. The hominid fossils from the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site are fascinating. The kids will be in awe of the whale and dinosaur skeletons, not to mention everything in the museum’s amphibian, fish, invertebrate, reptiles and mammal collections.
The museum hosts lectures by prominent researchers and scientists throughout the year. There’s an interactive Discovery Centre that makes learning about nature and science fun. Night tours and a "behind the scenes" tour of the Research Department are offered.
