Freedom Park is a heritage park and a monument to democracy located on Salvokop hill overlooking the city of Pretoria (Tshwane).
Commissioned during the term of former president Thabo Mbeki, the memorial-cum-sanctuary commemorates the sacrifices made for freedom and human rights. Ideologically and architecturally, it’s a remarkable undertaking.
Freedom Park consists of 5 interconnected symbolic sites named hapo, Moshate, Isivivane, Sikhumbuto and Uitspanplek. They are linked by walkways that lead visitors on a metaphysical and spiritual journey of forgiveness, healing and reconciliation.
A guided tour of the site will illuminate the many complex historical and ideological themes contained in the architecture. The views of the Voortrekker Monument, Unisa University and beyond to the horizon are impressive. Freedom Park is still a work in progress and will eventually house the Pan African Archives and serve as a repository for the preservation of indigenous knowledge systems (IKS).
