Oribi Flats

South Coast

About

Just getting to this farming area is a rewarding outing, as the roads meanders through some of the most scenic landscapes on the South Coast, especially the final stretch to the Oribi Gorge. Views of valleys, bush and rivers stretch out before you as you approach the gorge itself.

It is this gorge, named after the now endangered small antelope, that is the main attraction of the area and around which many of the attractions and accommodation are based. Viewpoints of the gorge offer good photographic opportunities, while the river flows down below.

The Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve protects a 1837-hectare patch of the Mzimkulwana River’s gorge, complete with red sandstone cliffs, trees, ferns, plants, birds and animals, as well as a picnic site for visitors.

A number of establishments in the area offer accommodation of varying budgets and grading levels, from camping and self-catering all the way up to exclusive lodges perched on the edge of the gorge. Activities are as varied and you can spend your time fishing, relaxing at a spa, walking, bird-watching, driving a 4x4 trail or even throwing yourself off a cliff (strings attached). To top it all off, you’re still only a short drive from the beach should you feel like a dip in the ocean.

Look out for

Ramble in the Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve, to appreciate the majesty of the scenery and the bounty of this area. While walking keep an eye out for antelope, monkeys and baboons, as well as more than 250 bird species.

White-water rafting in the Mzimkhulu River is one of the many ways in the area of getting the heart pounding and the adrenaline flowing. Rapids of up to grade four are tackled, although gentler trips cater for the less adventurous.

Adrenalin junkies won’t be able to avoid the temptation of the Gorge Swing, one of the many wild activities to be had in the gorge that is up to 300 metres high in parts. Others include abseiling 110 metres down the gorge and zip-lining across it.

Mountain-biking in the area is excellent, as you’d expect of a place of such terrain and natural beauty. Different routes cater for riders of varying abilities, from beginners to the racing snakes. Horse rides can also be arranged.
