General medical standard
Waiting times at public hospitals can be extensive, so it is best to use private facilities if possible. These are mostly of world class standard.
Pharmacies (sometimes called chemists) carry comprehensive stock and can be found in the smallest of towns.
Supermarkets often carry a selection of over the counter drugs and are sometimes a cheaper alternative to pharmacies.
The north-eastern areas of the country, including the Kruger National Park and the iSimangaliso Wetland Park are seasonal malaria zones. The peak danger time is just after the wet season from March to May. Consult a physician regarding appropriate precautions.
HIV and AIDS
With 5.4 million infections, South Africa has one of the largest HIV infection rates in the world. Please use suitable protection if you think you may be at risk.
Smoking is banned in all enclosed public spaces, including airports, pubs, shopping malls and theatres. Some restaurants have smoking sections, either ventilated indoor areas or outdoor open areas.
Food related risks
The standard of health and safety in restaurants is generally good and it does not warrant precautions beyond what you would normally exercise.
