South Africa has a population of around 49 million people. The average life expectancy of men is 49 years and that of women 50.
South Africa has 11 official languages and the constitution guarantees equal status to all. English is the most commonly spoken language in official and commercial public life and the second language of the majority of South Africans.
In order of descending number of speakers, the official languages are: IsiZulu, IsiXhosa, Afrikaans, Sesotho sa Leboa, Setswana, English, Sesotho, Xitsonga, SiSwati, Tshivenda and IsiNdebele.
