Average temperatures in South Africa tend to be lower than in other regions at similar latitudes, such as Australia. This is due primarily to the greater elevation of the subcontinent. Despite a latitudinal span of 13 degrees, temperatures are remarkably uniform throughout the country. Owing to the increase in the height of the plateau towards the northeast, there is a much smaller increase in temperature from south to north than one might expect.
