It’s in an area of unspoilt cultural and scenic beauty, rich in history, with interesting geological features. There are over 100 kilometres of off-road driving possibilities at Ebutsini, including the well-marked 30km Scenic route. Minwater 4x4 Trail

Minwater is a private nature reserve situated in the foothills of the Gamka Mountains, an isolated range in the Klein Karoo, between the Swartberg and Outeniqua Mountains. Minwater’s 4x4 trails cater for all levels of experience. There are three main trails: Rooiberg, Steenbokrant and Sandberg - plus the two additional grade 4-5 sections of the Kloof Trail and Die Gat. The routes follow existing roads, some of which are hundreds of years old, traversing stark, mountainous terrain across rocky ridges, steep ascents and deep ravines...

This is your chance to discover Kouga and the Baviaanskloof - a pristine natural wilderness area in the Eastern Cape. The Baviaanskloof consists of 260 000 hectares of pristine, unspoilt mountain wilderness terrain. Rugged side-kloofs cut through the length of the main kloof as it stretches from Patensie to Willowmore. This is a must-visit World Heritage Site on the doorstep of Port Elizabeth. Skurweberg 4x4 Trail

Skurweberg guest farm lies in a beautiful valley along the upper Fish River, nestled within the rugged Roggeveld Mountain range, only 45km from Sutherland. Skurweberg offers 4x4 driving possibilities for all skill levels. The circular Skurweberg Trail begins at the farmhouse, runs down the Skuinsvoetpadand returns via the Ouberg pass. The trail is not too difficult, but there are a couple of interesting spots and some very steep descents down the side of the escarpment...

Timbila, roughly translated as 'rhythm of the earth', is another little gem of more than 3 700ha hidden in the diverse landscape of the Groot River Valley. This is not the adrenalin junkie's weekend getaway destination. At Timbila the emphasis is on game viewing and the love of nature, rather than extreme 4x4 challenges. The perennial Groot River running through the reserve provides a lush oasis for the wildlife in the midst of the harsh Karoo plains. The river forms pools that always hold water, attracting a wide variety of birds to the region. A network of game viewing roads allow for hours of fun...

Moegatle 4x4 Trail

Heading north past Brits takes you into the open bushveld with its abundant wildlife and colourful traditional Ndebele villages. It also gets you to Moegatle 4x4 trails, a destination that should definitely be high on your list of things to do. Moegatle is one of those trails with a reputation that precedes it, so you'll probably arrive with expectations... and you won't be disappointed. The main trail is about 21km long, but there are lots more to explore. All the trails are regularly updated and modified to keep things interesting for all. SA 4x4 magazine hailed Moegatle as one of South Africa’s three “terror trails”...

Namaqua 4x4 Eco-Trail

The Namakwa 4X4 route is assuredly the longest 4x4 route in South Africa. It starts at Pella, near Pofadder, and stretches for more than 600km along the Orange River to Alexander Bay, exploring one of the most isolated corners of South Africa. The beauty of the route lies in the contrast between rugged mountains, green riverbeds and sandy plains. It offers peaceful silence and a rich variety of succulent plants. The rugged kloofs, high mountains and dramatic landscapes that sweep away inland from the Orange River are worth the effort to get here...

Mananga Trail

Mananga translates as 'wilderness'. The trail begins approximately 11km north of the Satara Rest camp. It first heads north for a short distance before turning east into knob thorn and marula savannah on basalt soils. This open flat savannah is where large herds of game concentrate at certain times of the year. This in turn attracts large numbers of predators, which is one of the biggest drawcards of the Mananga trail. The self-drive Mananga Trail gives you an opportunity to get off the regular tourist roads and have a real wilderness experience in the park. These roads do not require a 4x4 vehicle, but it is still preferable that you use one, to help minimise environmental damage...

Rondegat  4x4 Trail

The Rondegat 4x4 Trail is a scenic mountain trail offering stunning views of the Cederberg range and Clanwilliam Dam, with one or two obstacles thrown in to keep you concentrated. This beautiful trail sets off through the orange orchard along a trail consisting of a combination of sand and small rocks. As you head up the first koppie, things get interesting as some more challenging rock climbs test your line choosing skills. This is probably the only area where 4x4 is required. However, if you chose the correct line you should not have trouble reaching the top...

Boegoeberg 4x4 Trail

The Boegoeberg 4x4 trail is situated on the Lambertshoek farm overlooking Graafwater, Elands Bay, Lamberts Bay and Clanwilliam. The need to get to the Buchu, via many mountain tracks, is how this fantastic 4x4 trail originated. From the viewpoint at the top of the trail you can see many landmarks, including the white dunes of the Lambertsbay 4x4 trail, the pointy mountain at Elands Bay, the potato circles of the Sandveld, and other landmarks in the Cederberg Mountain range. The old donkey wagon trail has been transformed into a very popular 4x4 trail, climbing high into the “Engelsman se Berge” to the “Platklip Viewpoint”, where panoramic views await. In addition to the mountain trail there is also a short circular route with a variety of challenges and a sand hill climb challenge as well as a recently developed riverbed route…

Jakkalskloof 4x4 Trails

Redelinghuys lies in the upper reaches of the well-known Verlorenvlei, one of the largest West Coast wetlands, which flows into the Atlantic Ocean at Elands Bay. It is surrounded by rocky hillside with almost magical forms and shapes. This is where you will find Jakkalskloof, hidden between the Sandveld hills. There are two circular trails at Jakkalskloof. The Sand route starts out with some easy driving through beautiful Sandveld fynbos until it drops down into the riverbed. The very rocky Mountain route is rated 3-5 and you will be building tracks and picking lines with the utmost care on this sand mixed with rocky climbing. The Jakkalskloof trails are well thought out and challenging, covering both rocky and sandy terrain. Most of the major challenges will certainly test your off-road skills, but they are optional and most have escape routes…

Three Provinces 4x4 Trails

The farm Waterval is situated in the Versamelberge just outside Volksrust, only two and a half hours’ drive from Johannesburg. This is a beautiful part of our country where Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State actually meet at the famous Three Provinces beacon right at the top of Langkrans, 2 253m above sea level. The 34km-long Three Provinces Trail is very scenic, but it can be extremely challenging in parts and also very slippery and tricky when wet. It is suitable for anyone, however, as there are escape routes at the technical sections. Some tricky steps lead up to the amphitheatre and the waterfall. They might seem a bit daunting to novices, but the sight of the 20m-high waterfall tumbling to earth is worth the effort...

De Wildt 4x4 Trail

The De Wildt 4×4 Game Park is situated on the northern slopes of the Magaliesberg between Pretoria North, Hartebeespoort and Brits. The Game Park with its abundant wild life is specifically designed for 4×4 enthusiasts - regular vehicles are not allowed beyond the camping area. This is definitely a game drive with a difference. The route might not overexcite thehardcore 4x4 family, but the roads and some of the obstacles can be challenging. You are assured of seeing lots of game as well. The soft-roaders and 4x2s can drive along the 14km loop and avoid the extra challenging loops and technical sections by opting for the escape routes. If you are feeling a bit rusty you can always test and practise your skills at the 4×4 training track that has an array of obstacles...
