Meulspruit Dam MTB Trail

Meulspruit Dam MTB Trail

Ficksburg nestles between the foot of the Imperani Mountain and the banks of the Caledon River. Magnificent views of the majestic Maluti Mountains form a backdrop that changes with the seasons as you ride along these trails around the Meulspruit Dam. A gentle grassed slope leads down to the dam. However, away from the dam, that same slope steepens considerably as it becomes the mountain backdrop to a brilliant, custom-built 7,5-kilometre single-track loop through the hills. This was the course for the Mountain-Bike Nationals in 1999 and 2000, so expect an exhilarating ride...

Signal Steps Trail

Signal Steps Trail

Just Nuisance, a Great Dane, was the only dog ever to be officially enlisted in the Royal Navy. When he died in 1944, his body was draped with a Royal Naval White Ensign and was buried with full naval honours, including a gun salute and the playing of the Last Post. His grave is at the Signal Schools above Simon’s Town and, although you can drive all the way, there is a far more interesting way of paying your respects and taking in the magnificent vista of False Bay: hike up from Simon’s Town on the historic pathway also known as the Klaver Steps...

Wonderboom Nature Reserve

The Wonderboom Nature Reserve in the north of Pretoria is part of the scenic Magaliesberg mountain range. This 200ha reserve is named after its magnificent wild fig tree, which is more than 1 000 years old. The reserve’s natural vegetation on its hilly slopes supports a range of bird and animal life in the heart of the city. There are two short walks up the Wonderboom hill. At the top you can see the ruins of the Wonderboom Fort, built at the end of the 19th century to defend Pretoria against the British forces. At the foot of the hill are two adjacent archaeological sites. One is an Iron Age site; the other is one of the best Stone Age sites in the area...

Big Hole Museum
31 Aug 2014

Big Hole Museum

The Big Hole and mining village museum serve as a nostalgic reminder of the diamond rush days in Kimberley during the last quarter of the 19th century at the world’s largest hand-excavated hole. The De Beers Group recently spent millions of rands upgrading what is Kimberley’s top tourist attraction, with the result being an improved and interesting museum. The guided tour of the main tourist centre includes a walk onto the cantilevered platform, which offers a thrilling view while suspended over the edge of the hole. There is also a simulated underground mine tour and a look at the range of diamonds, including the famous 616-carat stone, in the high-security vault. To round off the experience, visitors can board the early 20th-century tram that sways gently along its rails to the city hall and back…

The Kei Mouth ferry is an old-fashioned pontoon ferry, which transports visitors and their cars, motorbikes or cattle across the Great Kei River from Kei Mouth to Coffee Bay, or the well-known "Hole in the Wall" at Coffee Bay. "The pont", as it is locally known, is one of South Africa's two remaining car-transporting pontoon river ferry services, providing visitors with an unforgettable experience 365 days a year, closing only when the river is in flood or the seas too big. The pont was started by Kei Mouth businessman Andrew Baisley and has become a vital lifeline for the communities living in the area...
