The Old Fisherman's Challenge Trail & Event

The Old Fisherman's Challenge Trail & Event

You don’t have to go far to get onto a mountain trail in Cape Town. The Old Fisherman’s Route encompasses many of these trails, allowing runners to run from Fish Hoek to Hout Bay or back. The trails offer a mix of beach, gravel roads, boardwalks and single-track. Very little scrambling is required, except down Blackburn Ravine, but this will be over before you even realise it. There is one river crossing on the beach. At low tide this is ankle deep, but during spring highs you might want to head onto the road...

So if you need to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life, it’s the perfect place to come and let off some steam. Rhino Park is also proud to be the home of the McCarthy 4x4 club and therefore the true home of the passionate 4x4er. It boasts one of the most challenging off-road tracks in the country. Lupela Lodge

Lupela Lodge

We had recently spent a couple of days with our friendly, salt of the earth hosts, Denise and Alf Ross (www.nightjartravel.com/accommodation/lupela-lodge) on the banks of one of my favourite South African streams, the Karingmelkspruit. Unfortunately the devastating drought conditions had taken their toll on the river, which was down to a mere trickle between the larger deeper pools. Conditions that were currently being experienced over most of the inland, central to eastern parts of the country.

Despite this I spent the best part of a day in the low water conditions, stalking spooky rainbow trout up to 18 inches! My good friend Pieter Taljaard and nymph ‘O’, aka ‘the Guru’, will be proud that for a dry fly man, I caught most of the trout on nymph. Even in the late afternoon, when the river came alive with trout rising to invisible insects and refusing all my usual dry flies, I cracked the code with a tiny emerger fished just below the surface film. The lack of flow meant that normal upstream dead drift and line mending needed to be replaced with an active retrieve.

Sun City Zip Line

Sun City’s newest adrenalin rush is the world’s longest and fastest zip line slide. The Zip-2000 at one of South Africa's favourite holiday resorts offers a brand new way to get high - deep in the African bush. Zip-2000 is not for the faint-hearted though. Start atop a hill a few minutes from Sun City and get ready for a two-kilometre long cable slide nearly 300-metres off the ground. You will reach break-neck speeds of up to 150-kilometres an hour, screaming your heart out while zooming through the air. This three minute long adrenalin rush is sure to blow your mind...

Aloe Ridge Hotel MTB Trail

Aloe Ridge Hotel MTB Trail

The major attraction of the hotel is the unique scenic locality. The hotel is built in a horseshoe shape that lies at the rim of a natural amphitheatre, which falls away to the river and waterfalls. All sides have views of the indigenous bushveld. It is situated only 40 kilometres from the Johannesburg city centre on 635 hectares of African bushveld in the Cradle of Humankind. At an altitude of nearly 500 metres lower than Johannesburg, the vegetation and climate are almost subtropical. Hotel guests are treated to a moderate three-kilometre single-track circuit through the indigenous vegetation lining the Crocodile River...

Dassie Trail, Nahoon Estuary

Dassie Trail, Nahoon Estuary

This delightful, short, flat trail is well suited to family outings and is situated in the Nahoon Estuary Nature Reserve in Beacon Bay on the outskirts of East London.  The Dassie Trail starts at the Visitor Centre (which also has a quaint bird hide) and proceeds through a forested section before opening up on a wide vista of mud flats lined with mangrove trees. For the most part, the trail is on a boardwalk made with recycled plastic from which you can enjoy an estuarine environment that is relatively pristine and representative of the bigger river systems in the area...

The Loading Bay: Cape Town
24 Aug 2014

The Loading Bay: Cape Town

I was invited to work here for the day, just beside Origin Coffee. I plugged my laptop in, connected to the Wi-Fi and asked what’s best. I was told the ¾ latte is most certainly best. Loading Bay’s barista, Brandon is from Durban and makes one helluva ¾ latte. If juice is more your thing, the lady beside me ordered a particularly interesting green glass of sweet-smelling icy fruits, but you’ll be tempted to change your mind by the caffeinated aromas floating past. The place is chic and modern: glass walls, wooden finishes and smooth vinyl. They’re even a clothing store – and not the kind of stuff you could find somewhere else. What keeps you inside isn’t a particularly personal connection… Instead, it’s that everything tries to be unique, and wants to be different.

Blouberg Rock Climbing

Blouberg Rock Climbing

Right up near the Botswana border in the far north of the country, Blouberg’s mighty North Wall offers big wall climbing in a truly African setting. Even by South African standards (there are plenty of imposing walls and routes, particularly in the Cape) Blouberg is BIG. And it’s not just the wall; the whole place is impressive. This is just as well, as getting there is an adventure in itself. The walk-in is a long, tricky slog, so go with someone who knows it on your first visit. It can take as little as 2 hours 30 minutes if you are au fait with the route and anything up to 8 hours if you are not. It doesn’t get any easier when you arrive at the rock face...
