La Patisserie: Courtenay Street, George

If you find yourself in George, you’ll be doing yourself an injustice if you miss this well-kept secret. Highly regarded by the local residents, La Patisserie is an original French bakery that specialises in breads and baked goods – warm ciabattas, buttery croissants, rich tortès and sweet meringues. Using only stoneground ‘Eureka’ flour, organic products and traditional recipes, their food is magnifique – to eat and digest. If French baking isn’t to your liking, though, there’s always the photograph gallery displaying locals’ art to keep you satisfied, together with warm coffee. It’s hidden next to the popular bar, Cactus, on Courtenay Street, and is perfect for quiet Saturday breakfasts. If only to practise your French with the owners, Antoine and Claire Sanelle, this café is one not to be overlooked.

Diamond Dash Seringveld Trails & Event

The Diamond Dash Trail Run takes place in the 18,000ha Seringveld Conservancy situated about 15km north-west of Cullinan. The route incorporates three calf-busting climbs, followed by some technical descents and a mixture of fast sections along undulating single-track and jeep track. It is a true all-round test of trail running ability. Runners will revel in the tranquil bushveld setting, abundant bird life and game, like the rare roan antelope. The infamous scramble up to the first koppie is generally a hot topic after the event. The Diamond Dash normally takes place in autumn and spring. The start venue is at the beautiful Goodland Estate...

Mount Everest Rock Climbing

Mount Everest, also known as Eagle Mountain, or simply “Harrismith”, is a short drive from the town of Harrismith, three hours south-east of Johannesburg. The area has some of the most dramatic and beautiful landscapes in the country - huge open views and constantly changing skies, with rugged inselbergs and mountains on the horizon. It’s unlike anywhere else in SA; rather like the sandstone towers and walls of Utah in the US, except in a much greener setting. The climbing is on walls, boulders and towers of pocketed and featured sandstone...

Rorke's Drift

Following the definitive defeat of the British at the Battle of Isandlwana came one of the most famous battles of the Anglo-Zulu War at Rorke’s Drift. What ensued was a battle between a large Zulu army and a small British contingent of around 150 soldiers. The battle lasted through the night and into the next day.Seventeen British soldiers died in the ongoing skirmishes, along with several patients in the hospital. The battle has come to be revered in British military history for the deep courage displayed. No less than eleven Victoria Crosses were awarded. Shipwreck 4x4 Trail

Shipwreck 4x4 Trail

The Shipwreck Trail hugs the stormy Atlantic Coast, traversing a privately owned and otherwise inaccessible section of the Diamond Coast between Koingnaas and Kleinzee. This stretch of coastline has been strictly guarded through diamond prospecting and mining rights, and nature and all the archaeological and fossil treasures have remained virtually untouched. This is fantastic 4x4 fun for the entire family and definitely not without a challenge for both novices and experienced drivers...

Lydenrust Horse Trails

Lydenrust Farm is situated in a lovely valley on the Mpumalanga escarpment close to the Kwena Dam (previously the Braam Rubenheimer Dam). The horse riding is through pretty montane grassland with some fun and mildly challenging ups and downs. The most popular trail takes one-and-a-half hours, but you can choose to ride for longer if you like. On the longer trails you may spend a short while on a quiet gravel road to get to the dam...

Paarl Rock Rock Climbing
27 May 2014

Paarl Rock Rock Climbing

The huge granite domes of Paarl Rock offer a completely different climbing experience to anywhere else in South Africa. Frictioning up granite slabs is wild and exposed – definitely not for the faint-hearted. The scene of much activity during the late 1980s and early 1990s, Paarl Rock developed a reputation as being a “hard man’s” venue, thanks to its desperate and often very run-out routes on dodgy, homemade bolts. But many of the routes have been rebolted and the opening of a number of outstanding new single and multi-pitch routes has put Paarl firmly on the list of 'must-do' crags for both sport and trad climbers...

Deer Park MTB Trail

A network of gravel roads traverses the steep slopes of Table Mountain, connecting to the Tafelberg Contour Road at various points. Chelmsford Road is a central start to the route, and allows you to get into the uphill first...
