Boulders Bay
5 May 2014

Boulders Bay

Generally, when people think about swimming in Cape Town, they either imagine contracting hyperthermia or being eaten by a shark. But I have found a place that looks like a tropical island, where the water is warm and sharks are non-existent. Oh and you are surrounded by cute penguins who swim around you. Acquiring its name from the massive granite boulders, which shape the sheltered inlets of water, Boulders Beach is possibly my new favourite place in the Cape. The African Penguins settled there in 1982 and are now fawned over by tourists from all over the world who want a chance to swim with the colony of about 3000 birds. So if you’re in CT over a hot, summer’s weekend – get yourself to the warm waters of Boulders.

Rockwood Forest MTB Trail

Rockwood Forest MTB Trail

Few members of the fat-track tribe do not know about Karkloof, which is undeniably one of the top mountain-biking destinations in South Africa. Situated in the area between Curry's Post, Rietvlei and Howick, this region is a firm favourite with KwaZulu-Natal’s riders. Mist often makes make for mind-blowing mountain-biking and with at least a dozen events every year in the greater Karkloof area (the main event being the Karkloof Classic held in May each year), you will have ample opportunity to explore the many trails...

Orlando Cooling Towers
3 May 2014

Orlando Cooling Towers

These distinctive towers, once part of a now disused power station in the suburb of Power Park, played a significant role in Soweto's history. This is captured in the larger-than-life murals of Soweto’s famous sons and daughters and traditional township scenes painted on the west tower. These days, rather than the rumble of turbines, visitors are likely to hear whoops of joy or screams of terror - depending on how you feel about bungee jumping or swinging 100m in the air between the twin towers. Other adrenalin-filled activities include abseiling, rap and base jumping, and scad diving - where participants dive without a safety cord into a net...

Big Swing, Moses Mabhida Stadium
3 May 2014

Big Swing, Moses Mabhida Stadium

Get ready for the 'Big Rush Big Swing' at the Moses Mabhida Stadium. This is certainly Durban’s new 'Big Thing', so do it, even if only to experience the world’s only stadium swing. (The big swing has been certified by Guiness World Records as  the "world's tallest swing", plummeting 106 metres before swinging into an arc of 220 metres). If you’re in need of more convincing, another good reason is that this allows you to absorb the architectural largesse of an iconic stadium from a whole new angle...

Eshowe British Military Cemetery
2 May 2014

Eshowe British Military Cemetery

During the 1879 Anglo Zulu War, a column of British troops spent over two months besieged at Fort Eshowe, or KwaMondi. Over 30 British soldiers died during the siege, largely from disease. They’re buried in the Eshowe British Military Cemetery, along with casualties from later campaigns. The cemetery is currently a sorry spot: on a slope, despoiled by litter, the graves overgrown. Access is unrestricted…

Sharpeville Heritage Precinct
2 May 2014

Sharpeville Heritage Precinct

A visit to the Sharpeville Memorial at Human Rights Precinct is a calm, contemplative affair compared to that fateful morning on 21 March 1960, when apartheid police were confronted by an unarmed crowd walking to the local police station to protest the carrying of pass books. The police panicked and opened fire, killing 69 people and injuring 180 others. The memorial honours those who lost their lives in the Sharpeville Massacre, as well as the survivors, ensuring that Sharpeville keeps its rightful place as one of South Africa’s most poignant heritage sites...

Classique Aviation

Classique Aviation

For many years the Tiger Moth was the plane of choice for training pilots, particularly military pilots. This classic biplane has not lost its popularity since entering service in the 1930s and most of those still flying are privately owned. Some are jealously guarded but many are used to offer scenic and nostalgic flights. Classique Aviation offers short flights from Rand Airport, Germiston opposite the Germiston Lake. They operate 7 days a week, weather permitting and also offer an in-flight DVD of your fantastic experience...

Table Bay Harbour
1 May 2014

Table Bay Harbour

While the harbour itself is dominated by the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, a world-class shopping and entertainment centre, it is also the gateway to a host of adventure sports and is one of the busiest ports in South Africa. Handling the largest amount of fresh fruit, and second only to Durban as a container port, it also has significant repair and maintenance facilities that are used by several large fishing fleets and parts of the West African oil industry. Because of the many tourist attractions offered by Cape Town and its surrounding region, many cruise ships also berth here…

Warwick's First Lady
1 May 2014

In line with a long-term focus on women in wine, Warwick Wine Estate is paying tribute to mothers in the period leading up to Mother’s Day on Sunday May 11. Women have always played a pivotal role in every-day Warwick life with Norma Ratcliffe being Warwick’s first winemaker and a role-model for lady winemakers ever since. Warwick has launched a Mother’s Day campaign to celebrate Norma, our ‘First Lady’ and the role that moms play in all of our lives.

An accomplished cook, Norma is particularly interested in wine and food pairings, and has been at the forefront of promoting signature recipes that are complementary to her wines. Warwick is in the process of publishing a Warwick cookbook. A qualified textile designer and accomplished ceramicist, Norma has been an expert at everything she’s tackled including skiing, cycling and mountain climbing. Her achievements include 11 Argus cycle tours, summiting Mount Kilimanjaro and climbing to the base camp of Nanda Devi, the highest peak in the Indian Himalayas.

Duiwelsgat Trail

Duiwelsgat Trail

This diverse trail from South Africa’s cage-diving capital of Gansbaai along the coast to De Kelders is an absolute gem. The trail starts just west of the harbour at the camping and caravan site, where the original town was founded around a fresh-water spring. The path takes you past a renovated tidal pool, which is unique in having both a salt-water and fresh-water pool, to Stanford’s Cove, situated at about the three-kilometre mark, a popular picnic and safe bathing beach, with magnificent milkwood trees and an ancient fig tree planted by the first settlers of the area providing shade. The path then winds through the limestone fynbos towards De Kelders...

Louis Changuion Trail

Louis Changuion Trail

The Louis Changuion Trail traverses isolated pockets of indigenous forest and crosses the Haenertsburg Common, a rare and valuable stretch of mist belt grassland. It is one of the few surviving remnants of this grassland biome in the region, and is home to over 630 species of plants. Prof Louis Changuion laid out the original trail in 1993 and it has been exceptionally well signposted and maintained. It affords fantastic views of the town, Ebenezer Dam and the surrounds. Find the start at a quaint little shop called the Pennefather, then head down Rissik Street to the edge of town...
