Apartheid Museum

Voted one of Johannesburg’s top visitor attractions, the architecturally striking Apartheid Museum recounts the compelling, and often brutal, narrative of South Africa’s pre-democratic history. Through 22 powerfully graphic exhibitions - supported by a soundtrack of chanting masses, freedom songs, and gunfire - visitors are transported on an emotional roller coaster through this traumatic period in South Africa’s not-so-distant history...

Enchanted Forest

Enchanted Forest

Imagine walking through a forest where the trees surrounding you are around 500 years old. A place preserved in time where a tree’s canopy can stretch to over a kilometer. I was lucky enough to take a rare walk through the pristine Hawaan Forest in a private restricted property somewhere in Umhlanga. The Hawaan Forest is a climax dry coastal dune forest, one of the only remaining in such areas. A dedicated team has been working furiously in the forest to ensure this magical place remains a national treasure. As I walked on lightly trodden paths I could only imagine the stories the trees could tell.

Brakkeduine 4x4 Trail

The Brakkeduine Trail has a lot of sand. The starting point is at the beautiful Klipdrift Dam, a popular fishing spot for locals. The dam reaches up to 3.5km in length when full. Although the trail starts with a scenic drive through nature forests, don't be fooled. Some tricky and technical sand driving awaits you...

Lakeside Pinnacle Rock Climbing

Although it doesn’t boast any routes to test serious sport climbers, this great little Table Mountain sandstone crag is a wonderful place to introduce beginners to the sport. It is also good for intermediates. The setting is magnificent, with great views over False Bay, the rock is solid and well-bolted and the largely vertical routes are all of a good length...

Howick Falls

Howick Falls

Howick is more than just a small town and a great retirement spot. This peaceful place, nestled in the KZN Midlands, is home to a beautiful 310 foot waterfall which lies on the Umgeni River. Visitors to Howick Falls have the option of viewing the great wall of water from a distance, or embarking on a 30 minute hike to the bottom of the falls - both are rewarding and provide great photo opportunities. If you like a bit of retail therapy, the surrounding area is littered with neat curio shops, rich with South African style and you will be surprised at how many foreigners you will meet. It really is an underrated tourist spot!

Cape Agulhas Lighthouse Trail
21 Apr 2014

Cape Agulhas Lighthouse Trail

This short walk, which takes in two of the Overberg's most popular attractions, the Cape Agulhas lighthouse and Africa's southern tip, is one of those 'must-dos' on any trip to the Cape. The lighthouse, built in 1848, is the second oldest in South Africa (after Green Point). It was modelled on the Pharos of Alexandria and has one of the best lighthouse museums in the country, so take some time to check out the displays and have your photo taken next to the figurehead opposite the entrance. If you bring some stamps, you can send postcards home marked with a special "southern tip" stamp...

Eerie Durban
21 Apr 2014

Seeing your city through tourist’s eyes

I went bicycling (not cycling- that requires spandex and helmets) recently through Durban’s CBD and Point area. Not a normal route for cyclists, but the beautiful buildings, colourful walls, shocked pedestrians and hidden homes made this self-navigated ‘tour’ a visual treat. The Point area is rather eerie with its new but empty developments. Veiled as a "waterfront" city, the promised land of new development in Durban feels more like a ghost town with its empty shops and half-built structures. And rumour has it that uShaka Marine World breed hammerhead sharks in the waterways. Who knew Durban could be so spooky.

uMngeni Fish Eagle Trail

uMngeni Fish Eagle Trail

The Fish Eagle Trail, named for the resident pair that is regularly spotted on the route, is a wonderful outing for hikers and birders. The trailhead is at the Green Hub, a Green Technology building and environmental information centre near the river mouth on the south bank of the Umgeni River. A great variety of birds can be seen as the habitat changes from tidal estuary to coastal forest. The birds, trees and tranquillity belie the urban setting of this trail and there are a surprising number of animals, including resident crocodiles...
