Tubing in the Midlands

Tubing in the Midlands

The Midlands presents the opportunity to go tubing in one of its many rivers. There are few things better than packing a picnic, road tripping with a car full of friends and hiring tubes for a day to peacefully explore and swim. The drive can be anything from an hour and a half to a three hour and beyond trip from central Durban, depending on the destination, but the outcomes of tubing are worth the drive. Consult guides at The Bushman’s river or Mooi River for their tubing courses, or alternatively, visit an accessible and charming camping ground such as ‘Glengarry’ in Kamberg to tube down their small, yet alluring river.

Dassie Trail Augrabies

Dassie Trail Augrabies

The circular five-kilometre Dassie Trail in the Augrabies National Park is one of the most rewarding hikes. From the rest camp, the trail meanders along the edge of the gorge to Arrow Point, from where there are spectacular views down into the gorge and over the surrounding landscape, which is dotted with quiver trees. Next up on this fascinating geological journey are the Potholes, a series of deep circular depressions that have been gouged into the rock by pebbles swirled around in the water, and then it’s on to Moon Rock, a large dome of granite that is a textbook example of exfoliation - a weathering process in which the various layers are exposed and flake off, revealing a formation that resembles the layers of an onion…

Plettenberg Bay Sea Kayaking

Plettenberg Bay Sea Kayaking

Plettenberg Bay is one of the most beautiful bays in the country for getting out on the water in a sea kayak. Guided trips are highly customisable to suit any type of paddler, from the never-done-it-before to the fitter, more experienced kayaker. The most popular trip lasts about two hours and covers nearly 10 kilometres in the bay. Guests usually meet on Central Beach to get their equipment, which is all supplied by the tour operator. Wetsuits and booties are also available for colder days and there is an excellent, safe lockup area on the beach for all travel goods and valuables. Trips depart at 9am, 12pm and 3pm, while in summer there is an option to get involved in the sunrise paddle at 6am...

Leopard Trail, Beaverlac
31 Mar 2014

Leopard Trail, Beaverlac

Tucked high up in the Olifants River mountains, Beaverlac, a natural heritage site, is situated near two rivers, the Ratel and the Olifants. The farm, Grootfontein, adjoins the Groot Winterhoek and the Cederberg Leopard Conservation Areas and is an example of successful agri-tourism. The peaceful and spacious campsite is surrounded by wild mountains, where you can wander at will, but the only marked route is the short Leopard Trail, which starts at the spectacular mountain pool and waterfall near the campsite. The trail can be completed in less than three hours, but since it follows the river with its numerous pools, it will probably take significantly longer, particularly on a hot summer's day.

St Thomas Church
30 Mar 2014

St Thomas Church

The current St Thomas Church Ridge Road in Durban, is an addendum to the original building – and is over 100 years old. Architecturally, this late Victorian gothic revival-style church is worth seeing for the building itself, with high-vaulted wooden ceilings, stained-glass windows and an organ that was shipped from the United Kingdom in 1905.

Moved to its present location in order to be central, the current St Thomas Church serves the community spiritually and in a variety of other ways. It is resoundingly popular for its periodic Sunday Sinfonia Concerts…

Kitesurfing Langebaan
30 Mar 2014

Kitesurfing Langebaan

Langebaan lagoon is one of the best spots in the country for kitesurfing. It’s an hour’s drive up the West Coast from Cape Town. The water in the lagoon is warm and flat with a little chop, and the wind is reliable between September and April. Conditions are ideal for both beginners and advanced kitesurfers. Cape Sports Center, based on the shores of the lagoon, is a good place to start. It offers lessons with highly qualified instructors who’ll help you get started and show you the ropes. It also imports a lot of kitesurfing products and has a ‘try before you buy’ policy. After a day of good kitesurfing you can grab a bite and down a pint in one of the restaurants based on the beach...

Platbos Forest Trail
29 Mar 2014

Platbos Forest Trail

Situated on the slopes of the Baviaanspoort Hills between Stanford and Gansbaai, Platbos is the southernmost forest in Africa and the largest remaining fragment of the Swartkransberg Forest – lowland forests of the fynbos biome that now occur only in tiny patches in the Western Cape. Platbos means “flat forest or flat bush” and it is an apt description – you wander on a rough trail under a low but dense canopy in what is a unique blend of Afromontane and coastal forest species. The dominant species are white pear, hard pear and white stinkwood but labels on the trees give you an idea of the diverse range so it’s a fascinating adventure that is suitable for hikers of all ages and abilities. Since it’s flat and in the shade, it is a good option in summer...

Three Sisters Trail
29 Mar 2014

Three Sisters Trail

This short walk takes you to one of the iconic landforms of the Sunshine Coast – the magnificent rocky outcrops of the Three Sisters. Drive east from Port Alfred on the R72 and turn off on the dirt road to Riet River, just before Kleinmonde. Park outside the security gates of the Riet River resort and follow the muddy waters of the sluggish river past a few rustic beach cottages down to the beach. The river supports a number of water birds and you might hear the piercing call of fish eagle as you walk. When you hit the beach, turn left and walk until you get to a huge rocky outcrop; this is the first of the Three Sisters. Continue from the first outcrop around a pretty bay beach to the second larger sister, then on to the third sister, which is spitting distance away...

Blyde River Rafting, Upper Section
28 Mar 2014

Blyde River Rafting, Upper Section

The section in the upper canyon is hardcore, and requires guests to have previous paddling experience and reasonable fitness – it’s best for novices to cut their teeth on another stretch in the area before tackling this big one. It’s a grade three boulder-garden canyon, with a couple of solid grade four rapids, and while it’s not a particularly difficult paddle, problems can arise if boats are regularly flipping. The full day trip covers a nine kilometre section in two-man inflatable Crocs...
