Kloof Gorge
13 Mar 2014

If you’re into breathtaking views, nature, hiking, waterfalls, and all that jazz, then you need to get in your car and make a trip to the Kloof Gorge in Kwazulu Natal. This popular place is situated within the 4.47km Krantzkloof Nature Reserve and during the peak of summer it is often visited by families and groups of young people who can be found sliding down and jumping off rocks into the crystal clear water or picnicking on the sidelines. It’s a great alternative to the beach and a much more exciting option than a swimming pool, so get to the gorge!

Krantzkloof Nature Reserve
10 Mar 2014

Krantzkloof Nature Reserve in Durban, also fondly known as ‘Kloof Gorge’, offers numerous, breath-taking hiking trails for both the beginner and the experienced. One such trail leads to a serene part of the Molweni river, in which swimming is a must, passing through large white boulders. The gorge’s trails not only offer exquisite views, picturesque picnic spots at The Ntuku or Kloof Falls - perfect for an outing with friends, endurance training on some of the lengthier trails - but also abundant bird sighting opportunities, and, with zebra and a variety of mongoose species and bushbuck, an array of wildlife sightings too.

Sun City Quadbiking
9 Mar 2014

Sun City Quadbiking

The quad biking at Sun City, unlike the nightlife, is definitely not in the fast lane. It’s slow, contemplative and nature-oriented. You meet up at the Sun City Welcome Centre, from where you are transported by open game viewing vehicle into the nearby Letsatsing Game Park. It’s a small park with a number of advantages over the much larger and far better known Pilanesberg next door.

Because the trails are more about game viewing than quad biking, there are no daredevil stunts. The speed is slow and the animals always have right of way. It’s not about thrills and spills and you don’t need any experience or skill...

Riomaggiore
9 Mar 2014

On a recent trip to Italy, I visited one of the five coastal towns of Cinque Terre, which goes by the name Riomaggiorre. Picture soaring cliffs, turquoise water, quaint villages, cobblestone streets and bougainvillea vines. It was the first moment that I truly felt I was in Italy. On the street corners you can buy cherries the size of apricots; you can do a 9-hour hike across all five towns; there are hidden snippets of paradise where you can cliff jump; a viewpoint with a majestic view of an ocean sunset; and some of the best food I have ever eaten.

On your next Euro-trip, you’d be a fool to miss out on this little piece of Italian heaven.

Leipoldt's Grave Trail

Leipoldt's Grave Trail

You can drive to the grave of C Louis Leipoldt, on the Pakhuis Pass outside Clanwilliam, but a far more interesting way to pay your respects to the famous poet is to get a permit from the tourist office (or bring your Wild Card) and walk down through the mountains that he loved. Park at the top of the Pakhuis Pass and take in the magnificent scenery before setting out. The three prominent peaks on the skyline on the other side of the road, “Faith”, “Hope” and “Charity”, were named by Leipoldt and are visible from his grave...
