Musina Nature Reserve
7 Dec 2015

Musina Nature Reserve, previously known as the Messina Baobab Forest Reserve, has the highest concentration of baobabs in South Africa. This is the place to go to see these surreal arboreal giants. They are a source of great folklore and legend, and have been adopted by Limpopo province as its tourism icon. While you're baobab spotting, you can also enjoy the resident wildlife at the Musina Nature Reserve. You're likely to see giraffe, zebra, kudu, antelope such as eland, and maybe even the rare sable antelope. There is a day visitor’s facility...

Bell River, Upper Beats
7 Dec 2015

This hallowed stream rises on the escarpment near Tenahead Lodge. The high-altitude portion of the river is characterised by shallow, fast-flowing water over bedrock streambeds. Occasional boulders, that had their origins on the surrounding peaks, lie in the streambed and influence the flow. Although most people fish the Bell for trout, yellowfish is occasionally encountered, as they move up towards the source to spawn during the warmer months. Beware of the sun and elements when visiting the higher beats; in the mountains, prevailing conditions can change rapidly...

Karoo National Park
5 Dec 2015

Towards late afternoon, the great, unyielding Karoo sky slowly softens its fierceness, and from pastel shades of pink and blue, the colours deepen to glorious hues of orange and red. The Great Karoo is a vast and unforgiving landscape of which the Karoo National Park is but a small portion. Many species that originally occurred in the Karoo National Park now again occupy their former ranges, giving it a wide variety of endemic wildlife. There are over 20 breeding pairs of Verreaux’s eagles in the park - one of the highest densities of this regal species in Africa...

Blue Korhaan
5 Dec 2015

Seeing a korhaan is always a pleasure because they often seem to materialise in stretches of otherwise nondescript grassland, taking one by surprise. Most korhaans are beautiful because of their striking colours and patterns, but the Blue Korhaan is exceptionally lovely because of its exquisite blue feathers and pretty black and white striped heads. This bird is endemic to South Africa and is near-threatened, which makes it a particularly rare and special bird to look out for.
