The Rust de Winter Nature Reserve is a good area in which to find a range of the common thornveld and broadleaf woodland birds that occur around Pretoria. It has a popular dam that attracts large numbers of anglers and interesting water birds. There is only one basic route along the western shore of the dam, which on weekends is dominated by anglers. Although it is rocky in places it is relatively easily passable with a sedan vehicle -  but it also makes for an enjoyable walk. Camping is allowed along the shore, but facilities are limited...

A particularly splendid crab glints in the sun. This one has an extra-large pincer specially adapted to hanging onto errant human toes. Crabs play an important part in aquatic ecosystems. Some species of crab lay thousands of eggs which are an important food source for other sea creatures. They are also very good at ‘cleaning up’ the ocean because they are omnivorous.
