Tsolwana Nature Reserve is situated approximately 60 km west of Queenstown and 30 km south- east of Tarkastad, nestled on the edge of the Winterberg range. State-subsidised stock reduction schemes were introduced by the government in the severe drought of the late sixties to help protect the soil against erosion. West Coast Fossil Park
23 Sep 2015

The West Coast Fossil Park protects what is possibly the greatest diversity of five-million-year-old fossils in the world. These fossils were discovered during phosphate mining operations near Langebaan during the late 1950s. The bones of about 200 different kinds of animals, such as bears, sabre-tooth cats and short-necked giraffes, have been excavated. In 1993, a 14-hectare area within the original site of the mine was declared a national heritage site. For visitors, a highlight of the West Coast Fossil Park is the “live” exhibit of an ongoing excavation of early Pliocene fossils from five million years ago...

The Jan du Toit's River
22 Sep 2015

Arguably one of the most beautiful rivers ever to have been stocked with rainbow trout in South Africa, the Jan du Toit’s is popular with many who are fit enough to hike its boulder-strewn gorge. It is not divided into beats and should preferably be fished over a few days on a hiking outing. Situated in the Waaihoek area of the greater Hex River Mountains, it is exposed to large temperature fluctuations and strong winds and clothing should be selected carefully before embarking on a trip. Due to the fragile nature of the reserve, CapeNature and the CPS offer limited two week slots for the season on a raffle basis to CPS members only...
