Bon Accord Horse Trails
9 Sep 2015

Conveniently situated just on the outskirts of Pretoria near the Bon Accord Dam, these trails offer a perfect regular weekend warrior escape for hassled urbanites. The riding is through pretty, typically peri-urban small-scale agricultural land with the addition of the open space around the Bon Accord Dam. The most popular rides are the Sunday 3-hour trails. There are two: one in the morning and one in the afternoon. The group starts off together and splits up halfway through, with one half heading off at quite a pace and the other taking it more sedately. Even though it’s a three-hour excursion it’s not a hectic ride...

Mushka
8 Sep 2015

The unique clothing ranges available from Mushka are made of the highest quality fabrics, most of which tell a story. The inimitability is a result of stock that is largely sourced from Nepal, which is then hand-dyed and embroidered. It is also sourced from local producers; a practice that supports local community development. A silk range from India is also offered. Mushka is located along the walkway to Howick Falls. There is also a shop in the central Drakensberg, for those travelling a little further out into the mountains...

Silwerfontein Trail
8 Sep 2015

This circular mountain trail on Silwerfontein Farm in the Voelvlei Conservancy, an hour outside Cape Town, is an absolute gem. You can hike it in a day and there's a deep, well-protected cave near the top of the mountain for those wanting an overnight trail. The trail starts at the picturesque Cape Dutch homestead (or at the converted double-decker bus that serves as the base camp should you want to arrive the previous day) and then follows a dirt road through the forest until signs direct you up towards the mountain and left on to a path…

White-backed Vulture
8 Sep 2015

The White-backed Vulture has the widest geographical range of southern Africa’s vultures. It is common in savanna areas but not in healthy numbers, so it is listed as a near-threatened species. It is both exciting and macabre to see a vulture in the wild, as these birds are always on the lookout for a kill. It’s fascinating to witness them wheeling majestically on wind thermals. In flight they are easily distinguishable from other birds of prey because of the fringe of feathers on their wingtips which is splayed like outstretched fingers.

Diepwalle is a wet forest with dense, indigenous trees and strands of ferns along a multitude of streams, located some 21km north of Knysna, and offers forestry tracks and some single-track. Your best option is to do this as a one-way from Diepwalle to Garden of Eden, as the other way around is not marked and you could easily get lost. Hadeda Trail
6 Sep 2015

The small Burman Bush Nature Reserve is situated in the heart of the built-up Durban area, but it a still surprisingly green and pleasant. The reserve protects a pocket of coastal bush with plenty of interesting indigenous vegetation, butterflies, blue duiker and a number of bird species such as the spotted eagle owl, lanner falcon, purple-crested loerie and the buffspotted flufftail. Hans Merensky Estate Golf Club
5 Sep 2015

South Africa is well known for its stunning bushveld courses, and the course at Hans Merensky near Phalaborwa, in the romantically named Valley of the Elephants, is one of the finest examples of authentic African golf.

Set along the border of the Kruger National Park, this golfing location is so wild that every member of the big five has been seen roaming the layout, but it is simultaneously of high enough quality to be ranked as one of the top 20 courses in South Africa. During a round here, golfers will have to keep their little white balls away from lakes filled with crocodiles and hippos, large waste bunkers and the dense indigenous bush that features on every hole.

Hans Merensky was recently voted the best walking course in the country, clearly due to the perfect marriage between its wonderful natural feel and superb conditioning. Green fees are a steal at R180 for hotel guests, R250 for affiliated visitors, and R300 for unaffiliated golfers.

Aloe Trail
5 Sep 2015

The Aloe trail, which is marked with red arrows, starts at the gate at the top of Tippers Creek Road between Amsterdamhoek and Bluewater Bay and takes a circular route via the escarpment overlooking Amsterdamhoek, about 15km north of Port Elizabeth. The trail largely follows clear tracks and old game paths as it climbs to the top of the escarpment. Just before the one-kilometre mark, the shorter, two-kilometre yellow trail branches off on an eroded game track, while the red trail continues inland for a while before returning to the escarpment at a trig beacon, from where where there are far-reaching views…

Orange River White-Eye
5 Sep 2015

This exquisite little Orange River White-eye was once classified as a Cape White-eye, however their blushing peach flanks are clearly dissimilar to their Cape cousins, and the two birds occupy quite different territories. The Orange River White-eye has a higher-pitched song than the Cape White-eye earning it the alternative name of the Warbling White-eye.
