Part of the appeal of travelling the scenic Long Tom Pass, which reaches a summit of more than 2 000 metres on its path between the towns of Lydenburg and Sabie, is tracking the old route used by transport wagons en route to and from Mozambique before there were motorised vehicles and tar roads. The new pass was opened in 1953.  Surrounded by pine and eucalyptus trees and overlooked by the Mauchsberg and Mount Anderson peaks, it proffers one of the province’s most breathtaking drives...

Giraffe
18 Aug 2015

A giraffe splays its legs to nibble food from the ground while another keeps watch. Giraffes’ long necks and tongues are specially adapted to eating high-up acacia leaves that other animals can’t reach, but at the end of a long, dry winter the trees are quite bare. The young Dombeya tree flowering behind the giraffes is one of the first plants to flower in Spring, so these two don’t have long to wait before the acacias burst with delicious green shoots and they can return to their lofty eating habits.

Rooiberg Rock Climbing
17 Aug 2015

The crags on Rooiberg, on the farm of Nuwerust in the southern Cederberg, have been developed only in recent years but offer great routes, some of which are about 120 metres high on typical hard Cederberg rock. There are currently 17 bolted routes graded 15 to 23. Most of the routes are quite long so use a 60-metre rope and wear a helmet as you are in a mountain setting. The crag is west-facing and gets the sun only from about 1.30pm, so climbing is best in the summer months. Since hardly any sun hits the crags in winter, it can get very chilly!...
