At the corner of Jan Smuts and Jellico streets in Rosebank, is an avant-garde structure, Circa on Jellico, a new contemporary multimedia art gallery. In keeping with its futuristic exterior, Circa is eco-friendly too. Electricity is produced on-site using solar panels, and harvested rain water is used for all the gallery’s utilitarian functions...

Gurney's Sugarbird
4 Aug 2015

An insect hovers close to a Gurney’s Sugarbird, potentially becoming its breakfast. Sugarbirds are so-named because of their diet of nectar, which they gather from flowers using their long, curved beaks. Gurney’s Sugarbird predominantly feeds from protea, aloe, Watsonia and Eucalyptus flowers, but they also snack on insects. These sugarbirds do not have tails as splendidly long as the Cape Sugarbird, but they make up for it by having a more melodious song. Gurney’s Sugarbirds are endemic to southern Africa and are mostly found in montane areas.

They are found in arid and temperate regions, vleis, open bush and woodland. This steenbok has particularly lovely, shaggy, rufous fur. Its large ears are distinctive of this species, and this animal’s ears have especially well-defined ‘finger-mark’ patterns. Steenbok are mostly solitary, except during the breeding season.
