Die Hel (Gamkaskloof)
4 Jun 2015

One of the main attractions for visitors to the Swartberg Nature Reserve is Gamkaskloof, also known as Die Hel. This was once dubbed South Africa’s lost valley and was, until the latter half of the 19th century, home to a community that had lived in isolation for more than 100 years. Mountain-biking, walking and fishing in the Gamka River, which bisects the valley, are popular pastimes. The emphasis here is on relaxing, exploring and enjoying a unique cultural/historical experience in a world heritage site…

Fountains Valley Resort
2 Jun 2015

When you head to the Fountains Valley Resort, south of Pretoria in the Groenkloof Nature Reserve, for a day of swimming and outdoor enjoyment, know that you’re not the first to be lured to this scenic spot. Two natural springs in the Fountains Valley, which pump out 25-million litres of clear pure spring water every day, are the reason why the early settlers established farms in the region and the why the Voortrekker government chose Pretoria as their capital...

Black-collared Barbet
2 Jun 2015

Black-collared barbets are common in the eastern half of southern Africa, and can often be seen in parks and gardens. They are somewhat weirdly named because their bright red heads are vastly more striking than their black collars! They also have a very recognisable ‘two-puddly’ call which is often heard in summer. It is a rapid duet by two birds that bob up and down as they call.

The Bridle Path Trail
1 Jun 2015

This is probably the most gentle of the routes up the mountain, but also one of the longest. Start at the car park at Constantia Nek and walk up through the trees to a gate. If you want to go up a very gentle incline, follow the road heading up at any intersection. This is the old forestry road, which was built more than a century ago, when the forestry department established a nursery of trees high on the mountain above Nursery Ravine and is still used as an access route and horse trail...

Doringnek Trail
31 May 2015

One of the joys of the Addo Elephant National Park it that while the main section has big game and is off-limits to hikers, it's still possible to hike in the Woody Cape coastal and the Zuurberg sections of the park. The trail starts at the Zuurberg rangers' office, opposite the Zuurberg Hotel. Initially you head west on a contouring path through grassy fynbos, enjoying the breathtaking views of the Zuurberg mountain range. At about the four-kilometre mark, the path drops down for about a kilometre to the turnoff for a beautiful natural pool...

Ukhozi to McIntosh Falls Trail
31 May 2015

Giba Gorge is easy to find but is easily mistaken for the mountain-bike park lower in the valley. To get there, head to the Longforgan Avenue parking area, walk down to the hairpin bend in St Helier road and over to the boom gates and then follow the dirt road down for about 500 metres to the start. Ukhozi means "eagle" and the trail is aptly named after the resident pair of crowned eagles. The walk to the McIntosh Falls, an interesting extension of Ukhozi trail, passes mostly through forest, riverine and cliff habitats...

Richtersveld MTB Trail
30 May 2015

This ancient mountain desert landscape brims with lava, porphyry and rocks more than two-billion years old. Volcanic ridges rear up along alluvial plains, making for extremely challenging riding. Once you adjust to the vastness of the land and the ferocious elements, the allure of the Richtersveld will surreptitiously weave its spell on you. The sandy gravel roads grinding through this land of wide horizons and stacked rock are sure to remain the domain of endurance mountain bikers, so be warned...

Wineland Ballooning
30 May 2015

Paarl, one of the oldest towns in the Cape Winelands, is known as the ‘Pearl of the Boland region’. It has world-class wine cellars, beautiful mountains and great hospitality. It’s the ideal place to relax and simply go with the wind. Wineland Ballooning has been operating since 1990 and offers daily trips between November and April. Flights usually launch at sunrise, before thermal activity whips up. After a quick explanation on how to assist with the inflation, it’s all hands on deck, and within half an hour you’re airborne...

White Rhino
30 May 2015

White rhinos are one of the largest animals in Africa, second only to elephants. They weigh as much as 2000 kilograms and stand up to 1.8 metres high at the shoulder. There is actually little difference in the skin colour of white and black rhinos. It is thought that the designation ‘white’ is a misinterpretation of the Afrikaans word ‘wyd’ which means wide - probably referring to this rhino’s wide mouth. This is one reason why the white rhino is sometimes more accurately referred to as the square-lipped rhino. The black rhino’s upper lip is much more pointed.

Kiteboarding, Bloubergstrand
29 May 2015

Kiteboarding is one of the fastest growing and most exciting water sport activities in the world. BEST Kiteboarding Africa is based in the best location to take advantage of the perfect conditions found in the Western Cape. It’s right on the beachfront opposite Bloubergstrand. This is the kiteboarding hot spot of Cape Town, nicknamed ‘Kite Beach’. A wide, spacious beach, Bloubergstrand makes a perfect launch pad. The wind factor has a lot to do with the area’s most popular pastime. On most days it blows from 10-30 knots. Of course, with its iconic and instantly recognisable views of Table Mountain and Robben Island in the distance, it’s a superb visual location as well...
