Mitchell’s Brewing and the draught beers it produces have been synonymous with Knysna for the past 28 years. Situated in the industrial area just to the east of town, they create good old-fashioned, traditionally brewed beers. Over the years, their flagship brands have been Foresters Lager, which makes up 75% of sales, and Bosuns Bitter. A tour of the small operation takes in each step of the process…

Compassberg MTB Trail
29 Apr 2015

The Compassberg route passes through the Sneeuberg range before meandering along good gravel roads, ascending more than 1 000 metres and covering about 100 kilometres. The going is tough at times, but very rewarding. Because it runs along good gravel roads most of the way, it is easy to bail out - provided you have a back-up vehicle.  Better still, take the little ones along for a stint. The route starts off from the Nieu-Bethesda village square, immediately cranking into a moderate ascent towards the farms of Doornberg and The Valley...

Baboon
28 Apr 2015

This chacma baboon displays the strong canine teeth that prompted early explorers to call baboons ‘dog-headed men’. These primates are amongst the largest of all the monkeys and are sometimes uncannily like humans. They have a very strong social bond and live in large troops, roosting at night in high trees or cliffs. A troop moves out to forage for food in the morning, and sentries posted high in the trees watch over them during the day. Their characteristic warning barks can often be heard echoing across valleys.

Auwul Mosque

The Auwal (or Owal) Mosque is the oldest place of Islamic worship in South Africa.  It was built in 1798 by an Indonesian prince, Imam Abdullah Kadi Salaam, who was banished to Robben Island. On his release from prison, Imam Abdullah Kadi Salaam opened a madrasa (Islamic school) in Dorp Street. He became known as Tuan Guru (Mister Teacher). After a few years one of his students, Achmat van Bengalen, gave one of his properties to the Imam. This became the Auwal Mosque, one of the main religious institutions in the Cape of Good Hope from 1804 to 1850...

Eland
25 Apr 2015

A common eland rests peacefully in the sun, showing just how graceful these creatures can be. They have extraordinary features and can sometimes look quite alien and magical with their strange long faces, large torsos, and protuberant humps and dewlaps. The eland is a very sacred animal for the San or Bushman people, and was an important food source for them. Many mythical figures in San religion take the form of an eland, and there are countless depictions of eland in San rock paintings.

Thathe Vondo Forest
23 Apr 2015

The Thathe Vondo Forest is sacred to the Venda people of Limpopo. Situated in the mountains above Lake Fundudzi, traditional folk lore says the forest is patrolled by a sacred white lion, which protects the graves of the chiefs of the Thathe clan who are buried in this sacred place. There is also rumoured to be a thunder and lightning bird called Ndadzi, which, according to myths, flies on the wings of thunder. The forest is comprised of giant hardwood trees such as the yellowwood. There is also a wide variety of ferns, creepers and plants which flourish in the climate...
