This unimposing little building sits on the pass between Harrismith and Ladysmith. It’s a jewel that is often stumbled upon by accident. Most likely the smallest Roman Catholic church in the world, the structure was built as a memorial by a father for his lost son...

Cape Town - False Bay Boat Diving
12 Apr 2015

The False Bay coast is best dived in winter after a northwest wind and offers a variety of dive sites that will satisfy everyone from wreck-seekers to macro-photographers. Although the water is warmer than on the Atlantic coast, a dry suit is recommended. Top sites include Partridge Point, Seal Rock and Batsata Maze. The best-known dives off this coast, however, are probably the Smits wrecks, which lie on the sand in about 35 metres of water…

Augrabies Falls Rafting
9 Apr 2015

The Augrabies Falls National Park is about much more than just the waterfall. There is a big stretch of land below the falls that is open to vehicles and offers game drives through some beguiling countryside. The park also extends above the falls, but this section is less accessible. One way of doing it is by boat with Kalahari Outventures. They run a 9km stretch through this section of the park. In fact, the take out point is just a few hundred metres above the falls...

Troyeville Hotel
8 Apr 2015

One patron described the now famous Troyeville Hotel as, “rich in history and stale beer, pink lighting and devil-eyed flamingos, and the best prawns this side of Komatipoort”.

The Troyeville Hotel dates back approximately to the 1940s. As the former Jewish area of Troyeville turned Portuguese, so did the hotel. Its now legendary “Pink Flamingo” Portuguese restaurant (so-named because of the gaudy flamingo murals) is the still hottest ticket in town...

Wondergat Diving
7 Apr 2015

Wondergat, a natural dolomite sinkhole that is some 100 metres by 75 metres across at the surface, is a magnificent cave diving venue near Mafikeng, the capital of North West province. It’s an altitude dive (about 1 460 metres above sea level) and because of the cave and its depth - which is about 70 metres but varies according to the season - it’s the preserve of advanced and technical divers only. But if you have the necessary experience and your own gear and want some deep diving in South Africa, this is the place to go...
