26 Feb 2015

Timbila, roughly translated as 'rhythm of the earth', is another little gem of more than 3 700ha hidden in the diverse landscape of the Groot River Valley. This is not the adrenalin junkie's weekend getaway destination. At Timbila the emphasis is on game viewing and the love of nature, rather than extreme 4x4 challenges. The perennial Groot River running through the reserve provides a lush oasis for the wildlife in the midst of the harsh Karoo plains. The river forms pools that always hold water, attracting a wide variety of birds to the region. A network of game viewing roads allow for hours of fun...

Snow Valley Bike & Quad
24 Feb 2015

Spectacular peaks and all-round rugged terrain make the southern Berg a true paradise for off-road exploration. Experience riding in the picturesque Witteberg Mountain range, home to the ‘lammergeier’ (or bearded vulture) and the black eagle. Try not to lose focus as you watch them fly gracefully on the thermals that rise above the awe-inspiring Drakensberg peaks. If you’re looking for steep mountain trails (up to 2 750m above sea level), there’s plenty to test your technical riding ability. The trails are guided and range from easy to difficult or even ‘technically challenging’. Your host will assess the group's ability and then tailor the trail accordingly…

A Sunset on a Clifton Rock
24 Feb 2015

I couldn’t believe that it was 8pm in the evening and yet here we were, still waiting for the sun to make the world go dark. The mountains were bathed in an orangey glow, and the ocean was still, waiting for the painting that is created when it is met by the setting sun.

Everyone has heard about the glory of Clifton beach during the Cape summer and naturally everyone has heard that it's the place to be to watch sunsets. But I have discovered that the actual beach is not the best place to watch the sun kiss the ocean. Slightly to the right of the beach lies an array of massive rocks which seem to have been designed specifically for us to sit on, staring out over the vast expanse of the Atlantic ocean while the Twelve Apostles boasts its splendour next door to us.

Black Horse Trails, Wilderness
23 Feb 2015

If you have never experienced the feeling of being on a steed, this is a good place to start. The horses and guides are friendly, kind and understanding. The saddles are all of very high quality and the bridles are bitless. It’s a kinder way for inexperienced riders to learn to control their mounts than hard metal bits, which can bruise their mouths. If you are well versed in equestrian skills, it’s an equally good place for an exciting ride. Situated in the foothills of the majestic Outeniqua Mountains, Black Horse Trails offers rides that will take you through plantations and indigenous forests. The bird and animal life are abundant here...

Krakadouw Rock Climbing
23 Feb 2015

Krakadouw is an imposing venue in the remote northern Cederberg that it is on the hit list of every hard-core trad climber. The long, somewhat intimidating routes are on impressive amphitheatres on the southern and western sides of the Groot Krakadouw peak. There are some fun single pitch routes on middle Krakadouw. There is nothing easy here and all the routes are pretty solid in their grades, so to really have fun at Krakadouw you need to be climbing consistently and well at about grade 21. Climbers need CapeNature permits, which can be obtained directly from CapeNature or from Clanwilliam Info...
