Giant's Hut Trail
20 Feb 2015

If you are looking for a great two- or three-day hike in the Drakensberg, this is one of the finest yet - amazingly – little-used trails. Giant's Hut is one of three mountain huts spaced along the contour path between Giant's Ridge and Injesuthi, about a day's walk apart. The hut lies on an apron of open grassland on top of the Little Berg, close up to Giant's Ridge, almost smack bang in the middle, between the Amphitheatre in the north and Bushman's Nek in the south. If you do this as a one-day hike, it's long and hard - a serious mountain outing. If, however, you are sensible and plan to overnight at the dramatically located hut, it's a pleasant half-day's walk each way…

Fish Hoek Valley Museum
19 Feb 2015

Fish Hoek is home to an early Stone Age site where the remains of 'Fish Hoek man' were found. His skull had the largest brain area of any skull of its age found up until that time, and has been dated at 12 000 years old. The site, today known as Peers’ Cave, was discovered and excavated by amateur archaeologist Victor Peers in 1927. Peers and his son, Bertie, residents of Fish Hoek, excavated Peers’ Cave over a number of years, discovering and documenting Khoisan rock art, stone tools, and an ancient burial site. In January 1941 Peers Cave was declared a National Monument. The Fish Hoek Valley Museum houses interpretative displays of the excavations that led to the discovery of the ‘Fish Hoek man’, as well as a display of prehistoric items from the area...

Gliding in Howick
19 Feb 2015

Gliding is all about hot air – it’s what allows you to soar silently and joyously aloft. These beautiful aircraft with their long tapering wings resemble majestic eagles or albatrosses soaring high above land or sea. You can experience this delight by heading out to the Howick airfield for a tandem flight. It’s all relatively simple and inexpensive. Howick Gliding Club uses the winching method of launching, as opposed to an aero tow. Like a kite lifting from the ground behind you as you run, the glider takes off as it is winched forward. Once airborne, the challenge is to stay aloft successfully. You can find warm thermal air to increase your altitude or swoop rapidly towards the earth...

Lesoba Hiking Trail

The Lesoba hiking trail is situated on a cattle farm in the Maluti Mountains not far from Clarens and the Lesotho border - an area noted for its magnificent sandstone cliffs and flat-topped mountains. A three-kilometre gravel road takes you from the R711 to the safe parking area at the farm, then you begin your walk by crossing the farmyard where cattle are often penned, but staff are normally on hand to help see you past the bull! The first kilometre consists of a steep climb up through a rock-strewn cleft in the rocks, which leads to the top of the mountain...

The imposing Voortrekker Monument was built in 1949 to commemorate the experience and culture of the 19th-century Voortrekkers. Sheilam Cactus Garden
17 Feb 2015

In the rural area of Klaasvoogds West, along the R60 towards Ashton, is where Sheilam Cactus and Succulent Garden can be found. Martinus Malherbe, who came up with the name by taking the first letters of his children’s names - Suzan, Helene, Elizabeth, Izak, Louise, and Marsha - established the garden in 1954. Today it spreads over 3,5 hectares and boasts more than 2 000 species of cacti, succulents and cycads. So great is the variety of Sheilam that it has been recognised by authorities as possessing one of the finest collections of specimen plants in the world. It’s an operating nursery selling these water-wise plants but even if you wouldn’t like these as part of your own garden, it is worth spending some time here observing the fantastic array of shapes and sizes...

A Day in Kommetjie
17 Feb 2015

After a long and busy week of travelling, arriving in Kommetjie, Cape Town, was the break I needed. This humble seaside town is rather enchanting. It draws you in with its quiet neighbourhoods, warm(ish) waters and beautiful boardwalk. If you are too chicken to take a dip in the ocean alcove, then do what I did and enjoy a coastal stroll through the fynbos and wildflowers. At the end of the boardwalk is a quaint lighthouse and one of those views that renders you speechless. It's the perfect choice for a seaside getaway, with many beach homes available for rent. I left at the end of the weekend pining after the smell of salt, seaweed and sunscreen.
