Crocworld
10 Feb 2015

Crocworld in Scottburgh offers a good diversity of displays and activities. There is something for everyone - the expansive grounds of indigenous plant life and the animals it attracts being the simplest form of enjoyment in this beautiful area on the South Coast. Marvel at the size and power of the crocodiles and alligators - it’s an excellent place to see one of the oldest species on earth up close. Visitors can see eggs hatching, hatchlings and gigantic adults. The crocs, however, are only one aspect of the venue. Crocworld also has a reptile section and snake tunnel, an aquarium, a wetland and a cycad garden. Then there is the walk-through aviary...

Cape Recife Lighthouse
10 Feb 2015

On the southern tip of Algoa Bay towers a Port Elizabeth icon, the Cape Recife Lighthouse. The broad black and white stripes of the 24-metre structure have been guarding the bay since the 1850s, warning ships to give wide berth to the hazardous Thunderbolt Reef located here. The lighthouse rises up from a sandy beach and is adjoined by a maritime building. Alongside it is the Cape Recife Nature Reserve, an outdoor playground proclaimed as a protected area in 1973.  It has unspoilt beaches and natural dune vegetation, walking trails and excellent bird life...

A Ballito Summer
10 Feb 2015

In the summertime the Durban beaches tend to get pretty crowded which is the perfect excuse to take a 30 minute drive up the North Coast and spend the day on the vibrant shores of Ballito. It's fast become one of my favourite weekendaway spots.

You should definitely stop for breakfast at the Water Berry Restaurant and take a stroll through their miniforest walk. If you're lucky you may even see the beautiful bushbuck that lives there! Then it's time to make your way down to Willards Beach and enjoy the sunshine, surf and friendly locals. Stay there for the rest of the day and return home hopefully with an enviable tan!

Namaqua 4x4 Eco-Trail
9 Feb 2015

The Namakwa 4X4 route is assuredly the longest 4x4 route in South Africa. It starts at Pella, near Pofadder, and stretches for more than 600km along the Orange River to Alexander Bay, exploring one of the most isolated corners of South Africa. The beauty of the route lies in the contrast between rugged mountains, green riverbeds and sandy plains. It offers peaceful silence and a rich variety of succulent plants. The rugged kloofs, high mountains and dramatic landscapes that sweep away inland from the Orange River are worth the effort to get here...

Mananga Trail
9 Feb 2015

Mananga translates as 'wilderness'. The trail begins approximately 11km north of the Satara Rest camp. It first heads north for a short distance before turning east into knob thorn and marula savannah on basalt soils. This open flat savannah is where large herds of game concentrate at certain times of the year. This in turn attracts large numbers of predators, which is one of the biggest drawcards of the Mananga trail. The self-drive Mananga Trail gives you an opportunity to get off the regular tourist roads and have a real wilderness experience in the park. These roads do not require a 4x4 vehicle, but it is still preferable that you use one, to help minimise environmental damage...

Wait a Little specialises in Big 5 horseback safaris for small groups of experienced riders. Loftus Versfeld
8 Feb 2015

Loftus Versfeld is a rugby and football stadium situated in Pretoria. The stadium has undergone various name changes and renovations. During the ‘70s and ‘80s, four spectator pavilions were added. Thus only minor improvements were required to bring the stadium up to FIFA standards for the FIFA 2010 World Cup. Affectionately called ‘Loftus’ by local sports fans, the state-of-the-art stadium is the home ground of the Bulls Super Rugby franchise (and Blue Bulls team that plays in domestic competitions). Fanatical supporters pack the stadium to capacity whenever their team takes to the field...

Cape Columbine - Tietiesbaai to Lighthouse Trail
7 Feb 2015

Cape Columbine Nature Reserve is on the West Coast near the fishing village of Paternoster. The rugged 263ha reserve runs along a very rocky stretch of coastline, which is wonderfully indented with inlets and coves. Tietiesbaai is a sheltered beach in a cove flanked by beautifully granite boulders. The turquoise waters look really inviting but don’t be fooled - they’re always freezing. Walking is a much better idea. To get to the lighthouse from Tietiesbaai you can either follow the road or be more adventurous and rock hop at least some of the way...

Golden Gate Horse Trails
6 Feb 2015

The Golden Gate Highlands National Park is situated in the Eastern Free State close to the Lesotho border. It’s mostly montane grassland, which consists of bright green rolling hills in the summer. These contrast spectacularly with the immense concave golden sandstone cliffs that give the park its name. One of the best ways to explore it is on horseback. The park offers one- and two-hour guided rides. These are more about scenery, sightseeing, birding and game spotting than an equestrian experience. They are quite slow and suitable for relative beginners...
