Cape Point Lighthouse to Cape of Good Hope Trail
4 Feb 2015

Pay your entrance fee or show your Wild Card at the entrance to the Cape of Good Hope Reserve then drive down to the parking lot at Cape Point. There is a wonderfully located restaurant here, which is well worth a visit should you need refreshment before or after your hike! If you want only a short walk, you can walk (or take the funicular railway) from the parking area to the old lighthouse at Cape Point. Hiking the short but steep and exposed trail to the new lighthouse and back requires more effort and a head for heights. You can visit both lighthouses in a couple of hours then hike along the spectacular cliff path from Cape Point to the Cape of Good Hope in another half an hour...

Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve Trails
4 Feb 2015

Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve with its kloofs, koppies, ridges and open plains takes its name from the sugar bush (suikerbos) protea. Suikerbosrand is the site of many Late Iron Age settlements and ruins of kraals decorate the hills. The stone walls are easy to spot from the trail, especially around the 6.5km point of the Bokmakierie Trail. Runners are also sure to see game, usually zebra and a variety of antelope. Although there are some smooth and open sections, the trails at Suikerbosrand are challenging. Ascents and descents are interspersed with Highveld rocks. For the less technically adept runner there may be quite  bit of walking...

Cool-Runnings Toboggan Family Park
3 Feb 2015

Cool-Runnings is a dry-weather toboggan track in Tygervalley, west of Cape Town. Unlike most other toboggan tracks, this one runs on sunshine, not ice! The first of its kind in Africa, the Weigand-manufactured, stainless-steel track meets international safety standards and guarantees speed-freaks the ride of their lives. The toboggans, similar to sleds, run on four wheels and can accommodate up to two people at a time. A ride lasts five to six minutes, with toboggans reaching speeds of up to 40km an hour, though it will feel like you're travelling many times that speed once you get the hang of it...

Vegkop Battlefield Monument & Museum
3 Feb 2015

Vegkop is the site of a historic battle that took place between the Voortrekkers and the Matabele on October 2 1836. The conflict has been described as the “Blood River of the Free State” because 35 Afrikaner men fended off a 400-strong army of Matabele warriors and incurred only two casualties. In the 1970s the government of the time sought to restore the site, which also has remnants of late Iron-age tribal villages, stone kraals and corbelled huts containing archaeological remains. In the grasslands around the monument complex a variety of antelope and birds can be seen...

Crazy about Cobham
3 Feb 2015

"Who wants to spend New Years in the heart of the Southern Drakensberg in a rustic house surrounded by mountains, rivers and horses?"

Uh, that would definitely be me, please!

Introducing the hidden treasure that is known as Cobham. Situated just outside of Underberg, KZN, this rustic house composed of many dorm rooms and minimal electricity is an ideal holiday option for large groups of friends. We chose to see in 2015 by staying at this beautiful corner of heaven, completing our time there with swims in the river, gentle hikes to a waterfall and socialising with the horses that lived in the paddock next door.

Southernmost Tip of Africa
2 Feb 2015

L’Agulhas is not only the southernmost town on the continent, it is also the official tip of Africa and the place where the Atlantic and Indian oceans come together. On a barren strip of coastline just below the Pharos-style Cape Agulhas Lighthouse, a cairn with an inlaid brass plaque marks the spot. Looking out across the ocean, visitors won’t see a definite line where the two oceans scrum down against each other, but geographically it’s a fact. An alternative to the ground level observation is a climb up the steps to the top of the lighthouse. This affords great views along the coastline and the town. The Agulhas National Park, proclaimed in 1999, is an additional attraction in the area. It was established to conserve the lowland fynbos vegetation types and the important wetlands…

Vhembe Trail, Mapungubwe
1 Feb 2015

Vhembe Trail, Mapungubwe

Mapungubwe National Park, a Unesco world heritage site, is situated at the confluence of the Shashe and Limpopo rivers, where the borders of Botswana, Zimbabwe and South Africa meet. The stunningly beautiful reserve has incredible rock formations and is also the site of one of the most important archaeological discoveries of the 20th century, the ancient kingdom of Mapungubwe - the forerunner of Great Zimbabwe - where excavations revealed treasures such as golden rhino. The Vhembe trail camp is situated in the northeast area of the park, not far from the Limpopo River and 14 kilometres from the main gate. This is big-five country, with lion, leopard and other predators, elephant, white rhino, giraffe and numerous antelope species, so the trails are guided by armed rangers...

Kabeljous Trail
1 Feb 2015

Kabeljous Trail

The fact that it’s appallingly badly signposted means that most travellers heading south on the R102 towards Jeffreys Bay drive straight past the Kabeljous Nature Reserve, which is a pity since it makes a pleasant escape from the beach. The180-hectare reserve includes parts of the Kabeljous River and estuary, as well as extensive wetlands, valley bushveld, euphorbia forest and about 2,5 kilometres of coastline backed by beautiful, vegetated sand dunes. There are two points of access to the trail - one off the R102 and the other, easier to locate, starting on the south side of the estuary. More than 100 bird species have been identified in this area and thousands of red-knobbed coots come to nest in these waters...
