Fort Nolela/ Fort Ulundi

Fort Nolela/ Fort Ulundi

Fort Nolela, also known as Fort Ulundi, was built by British troops commanded by Lord Chelmsford in early July 1879. The fort comprised earthwork walls and a small stone redoubt. Situated on the south bank of the White Umfolozi, King Cetshwayo’s royal kraal, Ondini (or Ulundi as the British pronounced it) was just across the river. On 4 July, the British army crossed the river and comprehensively defeated Cetshwayo’s army in the final battle of the Anglo Zulu War…

Cape Town to Durban Road Trip

Cape Town to Durban Road Trip

Travelling to Durban from Cape Town is usually a breeze, and the only uneasiness is caused by take-off and landing, or that minor turbulence. Yet we decided to travel by car. We also decided to take the route through the Transkei. Sleep-wise, length-wise and travel-companion-wise, it is taxing to the extreme. It’s not easy. But suddenly it is, when moments like this happen and the sun starts setting while you’re driving through abandoned fields. Or when you stop at a fuel pump at ten o’clock at night and have to convince the family running that little station to be kind to a stranger. It’s the strangeness and beauty of the trip that makes it memorable and, when you arrive, worthy.

The Hole Rock Climbing

The Hole Rock Climbing

Like the more difficult Silvermine crags, the Hole in Muizenberg is where you go to build endurance. Even walking up to the crag is hard work, and when you get there … it’s overhanging! The routes are seriously steep, with lots of roofs, so expect a serious workout. That said, with a few vertical routes, ranging from the easy “Hash” (16) to “Eiri” (20) on The Sideline to the left of the main climbing area, it’s got more for novices than the Cape’s other hard-core crag, The Mine...

Pied Barbet Trail

Pied Barbet Trail

There are various short trails in the Gamka Mountain Nature Reserve, as well as the well-known two-day Tierkloof Hiking Trail, one of 30 trails featured in the BBC’s Unforgettable Walks To Take Before You Die. The reserve supports diverse flora, with four of the South African biomes - fynbos, succulent Karoo, subtropical thicket and evergreen forest - represented, as well as a wonderful array of birds and reptiles and a large number of mammal species. All the trails start at the information centre, where you must collect a self-issue permit and an interpretive list, which corresponds to identified plants and marked waypoints along the trail. Initially you hike through acacia thickets alive with the song of birds, including fiscal flycatchers, Karoo robins, three species of mousebird and pied barbets…

Jakkalskloof 4x4 Trails

Jakkalskloof 4x4 Trails

Redelinghuys lies in the upper reaches of the well-known Verlorenvlei, one of the largest West Coast wetlands, which flows into the Atlantic Ocean at Elands Bay. It is surrounded by rocky hillside with almost magical forms and shapes. This is where you will find Jakkalskloof, hidden between the Sandveld hills. There are two circular trails at Jakkalskloof. The Sand route starts out with some easy driving through beautiful Sandveld fynbos until it drops down into the riverbed. The very rocky Mountain route is rated 3-5 and you will be building tracks and picking lines with the utmost care on this sand mixed with rocky climbing. The Jakkalskloof trails are well thought out and challenging, covering both rocky and sandy terrain. Most of the major challenges will certainly test your off-road skills, but they are optional and most have escape routes…

Tipo Tinto in Mozambique

Tipo Tinto in Mozambique

The country’s famous rum goes perfectly with the raspberry-flavoured Sparletta to create the infamous R&R (Raspberry and Rum). Tipo Tinto rum is a treasured symbol of Mozambique’s unique blend of culture: local rum blended with Western soda to create a fantastic summer drink. It’s sold in all the established liquor shops as well as in informal shebeens that you find sitting easily along the sides of popular markets, and it's sold mostly in five-hundred-millilitre plastic bottles. We enjoyed this simple cocktail every evening of our trip through the tropical land, making certain to discover a replenishment of our favourite rum at each market we stopped at.

Fort Glamorgan
12 Jan 2015

Fort Glamorgan

Fort Glamorgan in East London was built at the mouth of the Buffalo River in 1848 to house troops and to guard the start of a supply line to King Williams Town. It was named after Lord Charles Somerset’s father, the Earl of Glamorgan. Having been well maintained by the Department of Correctional Services, Fort Glamorgan became a National Monument in 1938. The powder magazine that was constructed inside the grounds of the fort in 1856 is still in good condition and is the only remaining building at the fort. It is only accessible through the main gates of the current prison, and visitors need to get permission to enter by calling the Area Manager of the Department of Correctional Services in advance…

Tsitsikamma Storms River MTB Trail
11 Jan 2015

Tsitsikamma Storms River MTB Trail

Start the trail at either the Tsitsikamma State Forest office or at the Tsitsikamma Forest Inn in Storms River Village. Tsitsikamma, an ancient Khoi word meaning “place of abundant or sparkling water”, perfectly describes this lush and lovely region. It is a place of craggy peaks, secret beaches and temperate rain forest, where giant yellowwood trees tower high above deep gorges and tranquil black-water pools. The existing Storms River Mountain-Bike route follows the old national road through what is now part of the new Garden Route National Park. From here, it ascends along the Storms River Pass on a quality gravel road winding through spectacular indigenous forest for an easy two-kilometre kick-off stretch...

Grootvadersbosch MTB Trail
11 Jan 2015

Grootvadersbosch MTB Trail

If you’re up for a challenging ride, the Grootvadersbosch Mountain Biking Trail traverses a rollicking route through conservancy farmland and the adjacent nature reserve. Mostly jeep-track and eroded gravel roads, this is not suitable for children. Various options are available, including a 58km, 2 day trail and all four seasons have something to offer. We opted to go high, riding onto the looming Langeberg slopes from the camp site and grinding up a steep forestry road on the opposite side of the valley at the start of our 10km ride. The shorter, off-road route follows old jeep- and single-track sections and makes for more interesting riding…
