Jorgensen's Distillery

Jorgensen's Distillery in Wellington is a family-run business that produces premium hand-crafted spirits. Roger Jorgensen began to experiment with the art of distillation in 1994 and initially he focused on potstill brandy. His maiden brandy, a 12-year-old Savingnac de Versaille Potstill, had brandy aficionados cheering. Jorgensen's has since expanded its range of small-batch, premium hand-crafted spirits to include organic vodka and absinthe, both firsts for South African spirit production. Master-blender Roger also produces pot-stilled gin and organic lemon and lime liqueur...

Fishing in Mozambique
16 Dec 2014

Fishing in Mozambique

We first saw the nets rolled up on the shores of a massive round lake, just before we entered the city of Inhambane in Mozambique. The following day we came across them being used on a white shoreline called Pansy Island. The fishermen skillfully throw the transparent-blue crosshatched lines across the shallows and the small weights tied to their ends guide them to land. The nets take about five minutes to drop down, capturing whatever fish were lying underneath them before they hit the water. Then the pulling act begins. It takes the fishermen a good fifteen minutes to haul them back in. We watched them pull out an assortment of different species, tossing back what they didn’t appreciate and keeping what they did. On that trip, this was possibly the greatest moment we had in ordering our supper.

Melkbosstrand (Afrikaans for "Milkwood beach") is a coastal village and beach. The mecca of South African divers, it is part of South Africa’s first Unesco World Heritage Site, the iSimangaliso (formerly Greater St Lucia) Wetland Park. The warm waters brought down by the Mozambique current favour coral development and extensive tropical reefs lie parallel to, and about 500 metres off, the shore. Whale sharks are regularly spotted between October and February and coelacanths are known to inhabit the depths off Sodwana. Technical divers have seen several at just over 100m in Jesser Canyon so if you’re qualified, this is one of your best chances of seeing Old Four Legs...
