Nagle Dam Run Trail

The Umngeni River has four dams built along its course to supply water to areas between Durban and Pietermaritzburg (PMB). Least known of these is Nagle Dam, which nestles near the base of PMB’s Table Mountain, a half-hour drive from the city. A game reserve (managed by Msinsi) surrounds the dam, with cracker views of the Valley of A Thousand Hills. The area is very hilly, with some climb sections kicking in at a gradient of 40%. The contour tracks and a good gravel road provide respite to runners between the ascents and descents. Some of the best contouring paths meander along the dam’s edge...

Hermanus Golf Club

Hermanus Golf Club

With manicured fairways set against a backdrop of speckled mountains and the deep blue seas of the Western Cape, the classic country course at Hermanus Golf Club has become one of South Africa’s must-plays.

Originally designed by Bob Grimsdell, the addition of an entire new nine by South African design legend Peter Matkovich has left HGC with the unique distinction of having 27 holes for golfers to enjoy.

In top-top condition all year round, what was previously considered a gentle layout has been replaced with modern classically designed holes guarded by majestic Cape Pine trees and a variety of natural water hazards.

As thousands of tourists roll into the famous whale-watching village of Hermanus during holiday season, the course can experience heavy traffic, so prior bookings should be made during these times to avoid disappointment.

Green fees vary from R320 for local visitors to R470 for international visitors…

Collections include works by “old masters” such as Jacob Hendrik Pierneef, Thomas Baines and Anton van Wouw and contributions by contemporary artists including Lien Botha and Norman Catherine are progressive and thought-provoking. The trail starts at the Van der Kemp's Church in the historic village of Bethelsdorp, the first missionary settlement in Port Elizabeth. The hike up to the Tugela Gorge to the base of the Amphitheatre is a Drakensberg favourite. It’s a long walk but is relatively flat, so it’s not very strenuous and the views are absolutely breathtaking. Vovo Telo

Vovo Telo: V&A Waterfront

You’re sitting inside a beautiful bakery finishing the day’s work. Your chair is right on the edge of an in-house balcony and you’ve enjoyed the fresh chocolate croissant with coffee. The sun streams in with the sea breeze and outside people enjoy the cloudless waterfront. A smiling waiter hands you the check while you pass over your bank card confidently. The moment comes… your arms rise up – then curl around your reddening face. It’s the panic setting in. See, you’ve forgotten your PIN and can’t pay. I mean, the world is probably ending. But, that’s alright, because the Vovo Telo waterfront branch is made of a wonderful team. They hug you and tell you that it’s okay, and then trust you to come back the following day to settle your check. They just don’t make them like this anymore.
