Tenahead Mountain Lodge
12 Nov 2014

Tenahead Mountain Lodge, a spectacular 5 Star lodge situated 2 500m above sea level, is the highest altitude upmarket lodge in South Africa and is located on 3 500 hectares of unspoilt mountains blanketed with snow during winter and colourful wild flowers in summer.  Surrounded by the breathtaking Drakensburg, Witterberg and Maluti Mountains and encircled by a crystal clear trout-rich stream, this secret gem near Rhodes is set in a secluded region of South Africa where the hand of man has brushed it but slightly. The lodge was hand built by stone masons with rocks collected in the area, and the natural, rustic look blends into the environment, hiding a supremely luxurious, warm interior…

The Fugard Theatre
11 Nov 2014

The Fugard Theatre

As I sit in the balcony seats waiting for the show to start, I look around me an am surprised at the array of people attending this production of 'The Rocky Horror Show'. From the moment I walked into the door of the Fugard Theatre, I was entertained by salesman and hosts who were dressed up in accordance to the theme of the musical and because the theatre is an intimate space, I am holding a box of goodies in my hands that will allow me to interact with what is happening on stage. I get ready to throw the confetti and suddenly realize what an unashamed theatre junkie I am. I would go as far as to say that it’s one of my favourite pastimes when travelling to new places and The Fugard Theatre is definitely a prime choice for anyone visiting Cape Town.

Croc River Canyon Rock Climbing
10 Nov 2014

Croc River Canyon Rock Climbing

This easily accessible crag enjoys a superb riverside setting in the Mpumalanga Lowveld. Despite being only a 10-minute walk from the Riverside Mall, it has a real feeling of remoteness. The vegetation is typical riverine forest with big trees and deep shade so it’s a very different experience to the usual sport crags. The rock is granite (though fairly skin-friendly) and uncharacteristically vertical, steep and featured. The routes are known for being solid at their grade so bring your strong arms...

Cecilia Forest to De Villiers Reservoir Trail

This trail winds through the cool shade of the Cecilia plantation and patches of indigenous forest, then up Spilhaus Ravine to the Bridle Path. From here, you can continue to the De Villiers Reservoir and the Back Table on the tarred road, which is hard on the legs, but the magnificent fynbos and sprawling views across False Bay and down the Peninsula on this section are a wonderful contrast to the start of the trail...

Eshowe Hills Golf Club
7 Nov 2014

Eshowe Hills Golf Club

The Eshowe Hills Country Club, perched on the rolling hills of Zululand, was established in 1907 and then redesigned by the prolific Bob Grimsdell in the 1950s.

Environmental sensitivity is a top priority: more than 3 000 indigenous trees have been planted and alien species are in the process of being eradicated, while the eco-estate cuts through unspoilt grasslands and patches of the mystical Dhinza forest.

Compared to championship layouts, the course is short, at well under 6 000 metres, with the emphasis more on pure enjoyment of the round than extreme difficulty.

The course was recently furnished with five large water features, which have attracted a variety of water birds and upped the challenge slightly, while the cynodon greens and sweeping kikuyu fairways are well conditioned and green all year round.

A unique feature can be found on the par 3 eighth, where a boardwalk takes golfers from tee to green through the shady forest canopy.

Green fees are exceptionally well priced at R120 for both affiliated and unaffiliated visitors.
