Potberg Trail
1 Nov 2014

Potberg Trail

Potberg lies in the north-eastern section of De Hoop, one of CapeNature’s flagship reserves. Both the flora and fauna are magnificent. Once through the gates you have a good chance of spotting game such as bontebok, eland and the rare Cape mountain zebra. Park in the shade near the old farmhouse, now used as the first night’s accommodation on the Whale Trail. Then walk around the back of the farmhouse and look for the white footprints heading off in a northerly direction. After a short distance the path heads slightly left. As you gain height you’ll see the Potberg offices on your left. Further up the hill a path comes in from the right - ignore it and continue on the clearly marked trail to the top of the 589m-high fynbos-clad Potberg Mountain...

Driekops Eiland
31 Oct 2014

Driekops Eiland

This remarkable site is situated on a glaciated pavement on the Riet River in Kimberley. Such pavements, planed by ancient ice sheets, are rare in South Africa. Ones with rock engravings such as these are even scarcer. The effects of glaciation date back hundreds of millions of years to a time when southern Africa was closer to the south pole and conditions were cold enough to produce glaciers that have left their mark on parts of the region’s geology. The engravings are far more recent, believed to have been made some time in the last 2,000 years. At Driekops Eiland the engraved images are on stone islands in the river...

Grand Parade and City Hall

Table Mountain forms the backdrop for Cape Town’s Grand Parade, the city’s main public square. The City Hall was built in 1905 in the Italian Renaissance style, and is one of the last Victorian-style sandstone structures in the Mother City. Vilakazi Street

Vilakazi Street

Vilakazi Street in Orlando West in Soweto is where two Nobel Prize winners, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and former president Nelson Mandela once lived. It has been made more accessible for the busloads of tourists that arrive here every day to pay homage to two of the world’s great peacemakers. Some feel the original spirit of the street has been lost, but it hasn’t lost its vibe. Informal traders and entertainers ply their trade and Soweto TV broadcasts from here. Local restaurants, Sakimzi’s and Nambitha’s, are always packed,  The Afro Nubiana spa recently opened its doors...

Head out of Rhodes along a gently undulating road, but don't be fooled – after a moderate 10-kilometre warm-up ascent, all kinds of mind and body alarms will kick in as you hit the lower reaches of Naude’s Nek, the highest and meanest pass in the country. Robben Island
28 Oct 2014

Robben Island

From the 17th to the 20th centuries, Robben Island was a place of banishment, isolation and imprisonment. Today it is a world heritage site and museum that commemorates South Africa’s anti-apartheid struggle and hard-won freedom. It was declared a world heritage site in 1999. South Africa's first democratically elected President, Nelson Mandela, is among Robben Island's most famous prisoners. The island prison also incarcerated other African leaders, along with Muslim leaders from the East Indies, Dutch and British soldiers and civilians, women and anti-apartheid activists, including the founding leader of the Pan Africanist Congress, Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe. There are regular tours to the island, which, among other aspects of the island's history, depicts the lives of political prisoners detained from the 1960s to 1991. Former Robben Island prisoners conduct the tour...

Cycling Around Cape Town
28 Oct 2014

Cycling Around Cape Town

Sure, there are a lot of things to see and places to go in Cape Town, but one of my favourite things about this city is that even the means of getting to these places is a great experience. Whether you are in the Southern Suburbs or the streets of Woodstock, cycling is a MUST. I love all the interesting people I get to meet when I go bicycling into town, and the fact that there is such a massive bicycle culture here. Recently, cycling around my block, I discovered hidden roads that led to beautiful street art and secret parks. I have realized there is so much beauty not just in the popular tourist spots, but also right at my doorstep.
