Kap River Trail

Kap River Trail

The 640-hectare Kap Nature Reserve east of Port Alfred is bordered in the west by the Kap River, to the east by the Fish River and to the south by the Indian Ocean. The three-hour canoe trail on the Kap River is popular but it’s surprisingly difficult to find information about the hiking trail – and even when you get there, you can’t bank on finding the start as the zebra regularly use the markers as scratching posts. But all of this gives the reserve a quaint charm and the ever-smiling rangers will soon put you on the right track...

Memel MTB Routes

Memel MTB Routes

The picturesque little town of Memel lies nestled between the pristine Seekoeivlei Nature Reserve in the north and the majestic Drakensberg, including the mythical cliffs of Kranskop Mountain, towards the south and east. The name Memel means “surrounded by water” in Old Prussian, but this authentic “dorp” has more than 600 kilometres of dirt roads to offer for mountain-bike exploration. The 58-kilometre Kranskop 4x4 route is a loop of bliss for the serious mountain-biker. Once out of town, there’s not an inch of tarmac in sight as you ride all the way to Kranskop, following the border with KwaZulu-Natal to the south along farm roads, passes and mountain tops...

Edinburgh Castle
26 Oct 2014

Edinburgh Castle

The city was well-known to me for inspiring Harry Potter and other gothic novels, but I hadn’t experienced it until I entered the castle. My mind revelled in the old stone and lichen-covered walkways and, staring out through a cannon embrasure, Edinburgh’s church steeple let me sit and wait for day’s climax patiently. It was to be the noon gun – a fiery telling that lunch was on its way and my trip was nearly over. The tour of the castle had been exciting and mysterious, with oddments such as the “Dog Cemetery” thrown in to lighten the otherwise quite heavy experience of dungeons, memorials and dirty dormitories. But, the grand noonday gun ended it off with a very literal bang, and sent us tourists scattering.

Rocktail Beach Camp is a tranquil, well-managed luxury retreat in an exceptionally remote and beautiful area of Kwazulu-Natal. Rocktail is set back in the shaded sanctuary of the lush Maputaland Coastal Forest covering the ancient dunes that make up the edge of South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal coast. The unspoilt stretch of coastline abounds with marine life and Rocktail is considered the premier dive site in South Africa, with pristine coral reefs that only guests have access to, while turtles can be watched laying their eggs on the beach. The Money Museum at Absa specialises in South African numismatics and is the country’s only banking and money museum. Located in downtown Johannesburg, the museum recounts the history of Absa Bank. It houses a rare collection of financial trading instruments (or proto-money) such as cowrie shells, tokens and beads used as tender centuries ago. Offering an unusual take on South Africa’s political history and economic development, the Money Museum at Absa uses currency to trace the country’s history. Old coinage and bank notes, from those featuring Jan van Riebeeck to the present-day Big 5, offer a monetary trip down memory lane...

Kliptown
25 Oct 2014

Kliptown

Kliptown is a collection of residential settlements in Soweto, around 40km away from the Johannesburg city centre. Established in 1903, it is one of the oldest urban multiracial settlements in Johannesburg. Kliptown first made history in 1955 when 3000 people converged on the dusty square during the Congress of the People and adopted the Freedom Charter. It’s  considered by many to be the cornerstone of African National Congress (ANC) policy and the foundation of South Africa's 1996 Constitution. With its history and thriving informal business community, Kliptown is well worth visiting. The area around the famous square has been significantly upgraded, with the Walter Sisulu Square of Dedication its focal point...

Three Rondavels
23 Oct 2014

Three Rondavels

South Africa is not short of breathtaking vistas and the spectacular scenery along Mpumalanga’s Panorama Route provides some stunning examples of this. As you travel along the top of the escarpment between the Highveld and the Lowveld, one of the highlights is without any doubt the lookout point for the Three Rondavels, or Three Sisters, as the dome-shaped dolomite mountains used to be called. The three stunning rocky columns rise up from the Blyde River Canyon (the world’s third largest) and tower about 700 metres above the surrounding area. The tops of the domes are slightly pointed and covered in green vegetation, while the sides are painted orange by bright lichen. The three natural wonders resemble traditional huts with a thatch roof...

Bergwoning 4x4 Trails
23 Oct 2014

Bergwoning 4x4 Trails

Bergwoning Farm is situated in a tranquil valley between the beautiful Maluti Mountains, bordering the Golden Gate National Park. The scenic 6km trail starts gently enough before a series of steep ascents, descents, river crossings and some tricky rocky sections claim your full attention. Depending on the season this trail can get quite tough. Moss-covered boulders, mud and swollen rivers in the wet summer months make low range vital as the route becomes unpredictable. In dry winter conditions you might get away with a 4x2, but check this with your host before setting off...

Durban Harbour

Durban harbour is a historic landmark that is also Africa’s largest container terminal and one of the continent’s busiest ports. The 3 main marinas – opposite the Esplanade, at Wilson’s Wharf and at the Bluff – are headquarters for cruises and ferries around the harbour, by day or night. Margaret Roberts Herbal Centre
22 Oct 2014

Margaret Roberts Herbal Centre

Margaret Roberts is a name synonymous in South Africa with herbs and their health properties. Her herbal centre in the Hartebeestpoort/De Wildt area (on the way to the town of Brits) is where she experiments, tests and teaches. The heart of the centre is the great garden, sectioned into areas: the herbal parterre, a kitchen garden,  an indigenous and medicinal garden, and the cosmetic and fragrance garden. The centre’s shop demands as much time as the gardens do...
