On 21 June 2015 the Scholtz family hosted the first Brandberg Rhino Run in Damaraland, Namibia. The race entailed fully self-supported trail runs, which started in the town of Uis.

With its longstanding history and mint track record, Save the Rhino Trust Namibia (SRT) was chosen as the beneficiary. SRT was created in 1982 and effectively helped save southern Africa’s black rhino population, which, at that time, was on the brink of extinction due to poaching. In the arid north west of Namibia, the desert-adapted black rhino is the only rhino worldwide living on communal land without formal conservation. Furthermore, they are the largest truly wild, free-roaming black rhino population left in the world.

The black rhino population has rebounded, but the threat has never completely subsided and criminal organisations are back with a vengeance. At the forefront of this never-ending fight are the SRT ranger-teams consisting of five individuals who track and monitor rhino behaviour and movement and whose presence acts as a poaching deterrent (http://www.travelnewsnamibia.com/featured-stories/roughing-for-rhinos/).

The inaugural KPMG Brandberg Rhino Run in 2015 raised at total of N$194,106.00 for SRT (see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-QD_c7125c and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lsfnYTehT8E for videos of the 2015 event).

In addition to the three running distances of 27km, 12km and 6km trail, this year’s event, to be held on 11 June 2016, will also include a cycling component of +/- 30km off-road cycling in the heart of Damaraland. The organisers are aiming for 250 participants across the running and cycling events, and hope to be able to donate N$ 500,000.00 to SRT through sponsorships and entry fees of the event.

The Brandberg Rhino Run & Cycle Tour is a fully self-supported event, and runners need to carry their own water and snacks. There will be one or two water tables on the longer routes where runners can refuel their bottles, but no cups or containers will be provided, as we want the race to be litter free. Both running and cycling routes are off-road on tracks and footpaths - a perfect blend of rocky, sandy, flat and hilly terrain. About half of each running distance is in a sandy riverbed with no water. This is Namibia remember!

To enter visit the OTB Sport's website. Entry fees are directly deposited into Save the Rhino Trust's bank account.

The start and end of the event will again be in Uis, at the Daureb Isib campsite. There will be a catered braai on the Friday night before the event. Online entries will close on 3 June 2016 and the first 200 paid entries will receive an event shirt and goodie bag.

The Brandberg Rhino Run & Cycle Tour

Vision: To have the desert adapted black rhino numbers increase at their normal rate and carrying capacity of the habitat they roam in.

Mission: To financially support organisations such as Save The Rhino Trust Namibia, in this instance, so properly protect the desert adapted black rhino from current poaching activities.

Current goal: To raise N$500,000.00 for the Save The Rhino Trust through the Brandberg Rhino Run and Cycle Tour on 11 June 2016. The aim is to have 250 participants in the 2016 event and through entry fees alone raise N$25,000.00.
