Trailhead: Aloe Ridge Hotel
General Information: Single-track and dirt road. Suitable for children, but stay within the Reserve to avoid motorised traffic. Riding is good all year round. The aloes are beautiful in winter.
The major attraction of the hotel is the unique scenic locality. The hotel is built in a horseshoe shape that lies at the rim of a natural amphitheatre, which falls away to the river and waterfalls. All sides have views of the indigenous bushveld. It is situated only 40 kilometres from the Johannesburg city centre on 635 hectares of African bushveld in the Cradle of Humankind. At an altitude of nearly 500 metres lower than Johannesburg, the vegetation and climate are almost subtropical.
Hotel guests are treated to a moderate three-kilometre single-track circuit through the indigenous vegetation lining the Crocodile River. Zwartkop Mountain, a prominent landmark in the area, is an impressive backdrop to this little ride, with its sheer rock faces rising up from the river and a proliferation of aloes upon its friendlier slopes. If you would like to extend your ride, the dirt road accessing the hotel provides a challenging climb all the way up to Beyers Naudé Drive (M5), from where you can link up with the 27-kilometre Kromdraai loop (Cradle of Humankind).
